2. When did you first connect to other people via computers?

Approximately 1995. We had a computer long before that, but it was mostly for playing games (or in my case, creating elaborate rooms on Microsoft BOB and hiding my proto-novels) at first. But when I was about 13 we got the internet. I was limited to “one hour” of internet time per day, which I found unfair, because you couldn’t even download your damn e-mail in one hour much less get anything done. That’s why it’s in quotation marks because do you think I cheated and sneaked onto the internet whenever I could? You bet I did. But this was when you paid for internet minutes like cell phone minutes and I always got caught when the monthly bill came in.

Did it stop me? Hell no. I was a little rebel, and I loved the internet from the moment I heard the dial-up sound for the first time. This also garnered accusations from my parents that I was “addicted” to the internet and I got grounded from using it a few times. But now I’m an adult and live on my own and can be addicted to the goddamn internet in goddamn peace.

3. Were/are you on AOL? Compuserve? LJ? Dreamwidth? A Listserv? Other?

I still have an AOL Instant Messenger, believe it or not, but we did not use AOL’s service. We used a local internet provider. I do have an lj (mjules) and a Dreamwidth (mjules is defunct, but I made finnglas recently). I was on a few fannish mailing lists as a 13-year-old, and also fannish message boards and fan forums. The mailing list was always fun because my mother desperately wanted to monitor and control my online activity and you can imagine how well THAT went down. Ugh. 

9. Did you ever own “designer jeans”?

lol no I was poor.

17. What’s the oldest article of clothing you still wear?

6. When did you get your first cell phone? What was it like? (Did it have a screen? Could you text? Was it a brick or flip?)

OOoo! This one’s fun. I got my first cell phone when I was a senior in high school, because I was commuting daily to the community college to take college courses. (I finished my high school courses ahead of schedule and dual-enrolled in college for the second half of the year.) It was about 45 minutes away so my parents didn’t want their 17-year-old driving that far on country back roads (I lived in rural Florida) without a phone. Mine was a little brick that didn’t have a screen (I’m pretty sure it didn’t even have caller ID). I felt really fancy when I got to upgrade to a flip phone that I could download custom MIDI ringtones for. (The first one I got was Moonlight Sonata, I think.) The very first text message I ever got was when I was about 25, on my birthday, my childhood best friend sent me a text that said “Happy Birthday!” and I was SO CONFUSED because I didn’t even know text messages were a thing and my phone sure as hell couldn’t text BACK. But then I got a phone that could text and suddenly phone calls were obsolete because now I didn’t have to TALK to anyone if I didn’t want to.

16. How did you spend New Year’s Eve 1999/2000?

Fuck if I know. I was 17, and the whole Y2K thing was kind of a thing (I had a lot of friends in tech, so I knew what was actually going on, in that it would be kind of a huge computer disaster if they hadn’t been working on them but not like we were gonna get hit by a comet or anything). Chances are very, very high that I stayed up until midnight with my best friend Lance, whether in person or on the phone, I don’t know. We might have kissed. I’m pretty sure we did. It’s fuzzy. I know I had just broken up with my high school boyfriend, who was his best friend, haha. I might have even gone to a midnight service at church because I was that kind of person then. I really... do not know.

1. How many jobs have you had and which one was your favorite?

Oh God. I’ve had a lot. Filing clerk, nanny, pizza chef at an arcade, we won’t talk about all the things I did when I was a temp because that was just one bizarre job after another, waitress, barista, loan processor, waitress again, dog bather, legal secretary, bank teller, editor, author... I know I’m missing some in there. As for favorite, hm. I really enjoyed being a barista the first couple of years I did it, because my coworkers were really amazing. But then the recession hit and the company started pulling shady shit and my manager resigned in righteous fury and the new manager started firing all the good people and I just couldn’t take it anymore. I do really love being an author and editor, though. If I can make that work, that’ll probably be the best thing.

10. (Have you ever been to a disco?) I... have not. I have been to dance clubs, but never an actual disco. It’d be fun, though! (I accidentally went to a dance club on BDSM night once. It was pretty cool even though I’m not much into the leather scene. There was a really amazing fancy rope-tying demonstration on stage that was gorgeous.)

15. (Did you or your family own a Betamax?) I had to look that shit up. MY parents were too poor to have something like that but I’m pretty sure my uncle did. I remember seeing it in the basement somewhere.
