The Cable Guy really is one of the best movies because Ferris Bueller is like, "No, Jack Black, I don't want to go to a free 1996 Soundgarden concert with you. I gotta go hang out with Jim Carrey." Like be fucking serious.

We all felt that something was changing in the media. Back then, it was the beginning of people realizing that we were about to combine our phone, computer, cable, and movies. It hadn’t quite happened yet — but it was [starting to]. In a way, the Cable Guy is the monster from the future who’s telling you that things are going to get really bad [laughs]. Part of the underpinning of this story was how this was going to make us all crazy and how we were going to lose our minds and attention spans. This thing that promises to bring us closer is actually going to make us try to kill each other — and that has come true.The themes of loneliness, media obsession, parasocial relationships, and our dependence on technology feel even more relevant today than they did in 1996.

The Cable Guy was released on 14 June 1996.
Lou Holtz Jr's first script became part of a bidding war, eventually won by Columbia Pictures, and Chris Farley was quickly attached to the project but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Jim Carrey then received a record $20 million to star and Judd Apatow to produce. Apatow recommended Ben Stiller to direct (Apatow had worked on the Ben Stiller Show). Apatow, Carrey, and Stiller then went to work on the script, adding many of the darker elements, references to other thrillers, and dialogue that more closely matched Carrey's style (the script went to arbitration by the Writers Guild, which decided to give sole credit to Holtz).
The Cable Guy was a significant box office success, opening at #1 and earning more than #100 million (about $200 million in today's value) on a $47 million budget. Many critics disliked the darker elements of the film (and Carrey's "bizarre" performance) and branded the film a failure (it did not perform as well as some of Carrey's other films such as 1994's The Mask and Dumb and Dumber).
Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. are getting the New Girl reunion, except as a Hulu comedy pilot inspired by The Cable Guy.
The untitled project takes the 1996 Jim Carrey/Matthew Broderick black comedy and drags it into the streaming age, where cable is basically a museum exhibit and algorithms are now doing most of the emotional damage. Johnson will play Chip Douglas, an old-school cable technician who’s feeling more than a little obsolete, while Wayans Jr. plays Steven Stephens, the guy who calls to have his cable turned back on and accidentally reconnects with a childhood friend who remembers him a little too much.
The show isn’t being pitched as a straight remake, more of a Fargo-style “inspired by” situation, which is good news for anyone who likes their nostalgia lightly rewired instead of fully rebooted. The pilot comes from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia writer Rob Rosell and Cobra Kai duo Joe Piarulli and Luan Thomas.
