The Lizards (Lina Wertmüller, 1963)
Is it a stipulated Italian director rite of passage that their first movie must be about aimless young men in a nowhere town? This had less affection for them than most, so is automatically better. Also centred in a political and economic realisty/absurdity that those others probably also have but pronounced here. Works great as a town tapestry film too. And, from the little i’ve seen of Wertmuller’s other movies, this has her cheek all over it.
