Dedicated Donella disliker, but I do still feel like she does know Hugo better than anyone. But, mostly just because she can read people. She recognizes tiny gestures he makes as anxiety or anger or joy when nobody else can. Especially in Hugo, because most of his physical emotional cues are small, and wouldn’t be noticed by most people. Varian’s known Hugo for months and can’t tell when he subconsciously lies, but Donella can tell if he is because he made eye contact for a second too long while trying to make his lie look more believable, because he does these things by instinct now. Hugo earns his keep with Donella one way or another, and she lets him have it because she’s fully aware Hugo is an asset. She makes him believe he isn’t while being aware he is. She recognizes when he’s tired and makes him rest. Not because she’s a good person, but because he works better when rested. She has the ability to read him like a book, so she does -that one anon
SHAKES YOU LIKE A FUCKING RAGDOLL
YOU GET IT, YOU GET IT!!!! SHE CAN READ HIM LIKE A FUCKING CHILDREN'S BOOK.
And for Hugo, that's terrifying. All his actions, words and gestures are so practiced and calculated. If he were to slip up in any way, it would be so subtle that not a single person would notice. No one can read him.
But Donella can.
She picks up on every single anxious cue, and learns how to exploit it.
I don’t like making Donella out to be the big evil but GOD I think she’s awful. She’s not magical, or wanting to take over the world. She’s just a bad person. She’s the kind to lean in Hugo’s face and tell him to stop being scared when even he didn’t know he was scared. She’s holding the vat7k kids hostage and showing Hugo off like a spectacle to Varian and he’s TERRIFIED, because she could tell Varian anything. She could tell him nothing, or she could tell him all the worst thing’s Hugo’s done that he hates. But she doesn’t, just to have that authority after him. She knew Ulla and Quirin, she knows their son would forgive Hugo in a heartbeat. So she dangles it over Hugo’s head and goes “I could ruin your life if I wanted to” without ever actually saying anything. Varian believes Donella is bad in the way that Zhan Tiri was bad, like a villain. Hugo knows she’s just an awful person who exploits others to advance herself -that one anon
In Hugo's life, she's definitely the biggest bad there is.
She was the best thing to ever happen to him when he was younger, then proceeded to become everything he's afraid of.
And everything he's afraid of being.
Rewatching tts and remembering how much of a little freak Varian is. Quirin was probably so concerned about Varian making shrines to a criminal in his basement and being accident-prone while creating explosions. I need him to maintain that energy in vat7k because he’s such a little dork I love him -that one anon
I like to think while he's still accident prone, the fear and anxiety about what he caused to happen (the uh, amber. His dad.) causes him to be SIGNIFICANTLY more careful in the future. Not because he actually gets better at being careful, just because he's sickeningly terrified of messing up like that again.
He moves slower as to not knock stuff over, he watches his feet when he walks so he doesn't trip, he pre-measures chemicals with droppers and beakers so he doesn't accidentally spill something dangerous onto/into something he's not as experienced with because what if it happens again?
What if he kills the people he cares about? All because he was just a little too careless? What if no one forgives him?
REAL he has anxiety and he’s less clumsy but he still drops stuff and he gets visibly uncomfortable whenever he drops something. He drops a vial that’s just water without any chemicals yet and jumps a mile in the air
He's pouring some water and something startles him so he spills it everywhere then has a complete panic-induced breakdown remembering that one time it wasn't just water.
Even with how good things are, and the friends he makes, and the people he has, it always haunts him that he himself could be the reason that all gets lost.
Varian, appearance-wise, is extremely unassuming and I think that terrifies him. A big part of him is scared of himself. He's caused deaths before. Accidents, of course, but still. He's caused the loss of a human life more than once. Then on top of that, in his fit of absolute rage, pain, and hurt, he almost did what he, at the time thought, would intentionally cause the death of the queen. He almost intentionally killed another person. He was prepared to do so, and was capable of doing so.
But Varian is small, even when he gets older, he still has a youthful face and a big smile. He's not a rugged criminal. No stranger would assume what he'd been capable of when he was only 14 years old. Knowing that no one can see the terrible, terrible things he was capable of absolutely terrifies him.

My dog woke me up at 5am licking my feet which resulted in a weird dream where I sent you a video of my dog and then realized my feet were in it, so I sent you an ask begging you not to publish it, but you did anyways. So that was kind of weird and I can’t determine why that would ever happen
I hate this website
Thinking about Donella (derogatory) because every single canon piece of information we have about her is like “She’s a horrible awful person! She exploited Hugo multiple times over her issues from twenty years ago” and the vat7k fandom treats her like she’s an angel -that one anon
I feel like I've seen a good even mix of "Donella does her best to support Hugo" and "Donella only uses Hugo for his skills"
I think the GENERAL consensus is that while she IS just using him, she has a soft spot for him deep down somewhere.
I just love completely irredeemable villains, so in my book she's literally just a terrible person who found Hugo incredibly easy to exploit given how young and vulnerable he was when she took him in. She recognizes his skill and knows how to use him to her advantage, and she's happy to keep him around for those reasons, but she doesn't genuinely care for him whatsoever. If he ever steps too far out of line, she could easily break him down enough to drag him back in.
Just imaging them interacting like “You too?” “Yeah.”
I don’t want to see Hugo with tiny amounts of scars on his face and neck from the black rocks, I need this man with scars that get him second glances at the grocery store or it’s not completing my dissociation goals (Hugo disease)
Oh yeah so something big like
The chemical burn scars on Anna's modern/sci-fi Hugo?
(Art credit to Anna Lencioni obviously)
