“I apologize for the short notice. Something’s come up at work; both Sanjay and I are needed.” Luke pressed a kiss to his daughter’s hair before handing her off to Jo. “I will do my best to pick her up this evening. If I’m unable to, I’ll make sure you know.”
Sarah, who had been woken quite abruptly, was initially unaware of her change in scenery, but her eyes soon lit up when she saw who she would be staying with. “JoJo!” she squealed.
Jo took Sarah easily, settling her against her hip like it was the most natural thing in the world, one hand already smoothing down the child’s sleep-tangled hair. She gave Luke a look that was equal parts fond and unimpressed, the sort reserved for people she’d known long enough to love without question. “Go,” she said gently. “You and Sanjay do what you need to do. I’ve got her.”
She brushed a kiss to the top of Sarah’s head, lowering her voice just enough to be soothing. “We’ll be just fine, sweetheart. I’ve got snacks, cartoons, and stories for you."
Then her eyes lifted back to Luke, softer now. “Don’t rush yourself into trouble. I’ll keep her fed, bathed, and happy. You just get home when you can.” She pat the side of his pretty face. "Be safe Luke."
