Also in odd stuff from my weekend:
At the wedding, an old friend of my dad’s may have successfully convinced him to buy some sheep. Apparently, the guy has something like 17 lambs this year and is running out of space. While we had been discussing getting goats, dad is very susceptible to a good deal.
Then we learned that my younger brother-in-law impulsively ordered 2 dozen Ayam Cemani chicks from a breeder about an hour away. Yes the all black chickens. This was either the minimum order or my brother-in-law greatly misunderstood the process. It could go either way. Regardless, this will increase our flock by nearly 50%. Even if none of the eggs our broody hens are currently incubating hatch, we will have severely broken our plans of keeping the flock at a steady size.
And I am still strongly advocating for ducks. Dad’s making progress on fixing the lake again and I’ve gotten my sister on board for using ducks as pest control for her flower and pumpkins. At this point, though, I’m starting to wonder if I should do as the rest of my family and just… show up with ducklings one day.
No matter what, though, Dad and my brother are going to have to build a lot of pastures this summer. We’ll have to double the chicken run at the very least and start fencing areas off for livestock.
