Hi, I was reading your thoughts about Rogue One and I just think its so perceptive and really nails a lot of what I didn't like about the film. Especially the stuff about Jyn being the wrong protagonist; its just spot on! I can’t find anything on Tumblr, I’m afraid (maybe the person who reblogged it onto my dash will see this post?). It was a short post, though, not a lengthy analysis, so I can reproduce the OP’s argument. It concerned the recent reveal that the playable protagonist of The Last Of Us 2 would be Ellie, the young girl who is protected by the male protag of the first game. OP observed that the more you develop IPs starring older male protagonists whose primary goal is protecting/saving a young daughter figure, the more you’ll end up with IP sequels starring said daughters, set years later, because that is simply the logical progression of that kind of arc story (Dishonored 2 being another recent example). So the type of gamer who throws hissy fits about female protagonists is going to be increasingly out of luck.

OP also attributed the prevalence of the original trope to gaming culture’s discomfort with emotional displays between men and boys, and perhaps with romance. I don’t think that is all of it, but I do agree that there are storylines where pop culture writers are more likely to insert a father-son relationship, versus storylines where writers are more likely to insert a father-daughter relationship. Galen and Jyn are typical of the kind of story where writers like to reach for father-daughter, which is when there is requirement for an onscreen, emotionally tender connection, scenes with a vulnerable child who needs to be unconditionally protected from outside danger, a de-emphasis on the child’s conflict as to "becoming” / “not becoming” like the father, and too many male characters otherwise. XD;
