I’m working on the longfic that generated my latest short story, For the Best.

It’s about my Thaia (my asari OC) and Lexi T’Perro. In the Milky Way, 4-5 weeks away from when the Initiative leaves for Andromeda, they meet on the Initiative’s station. How? Thaia got into a bar fight and the Hyperion’s medical team had the station’s clinic shift at the time. While they both are interested in the other, they end up agreeing to be friends because of the impending departure and maybe they’ll try for something more in the Milky Way (though Lexi doesn’t outright say that it would have to be after she figures out the issue her exes complained about). In the weeks up to departure, they end up becoming fast, close friends. Best friends, basically. Lexi loosens up a little,  enough that Thaia manages to rope Lexi into some mischief that ends in arrest. (Harry initially clues Thaia in—and Thaia sees for herself, as well as Lexi mentioning it in passing—that Lexi invests too much time to her work when she doesn’t need to and so Thaia takes it upon herself to make sure she has not-work-associated fun as often as possible.)

In the Initiative, Thaia’s assigned to the Nexus with her father, her aunt and uncle, one of her sisters, and that sister’s two daughters. Thaia’s other two sisters are assigned to the Leusinia. Most of the people in Thaia’s family are engineers of one sort of another, who were also either commandos or mercenaries before they became engineers.

Then, as we all know, things go to shit for everyone in Andromeda. Thaia’s assigned to the Nexus and experiences a significant amount of loss, which throws her into the ambivalent about anything more than best friendship with Lexi (once they’ve caught up with each other) because she doesn’t want to lose anyone else close to her—Thaia thinks if she consciously gets closer to Lexi, she’ll end up losing her, too. Because I’m a fucking sucker for the friends to lovers trope, it becomes screamingly obvious they’ve grown to love each other anyway and they should stop being willfully ignorant because it isn’t like it’s going to hurt any less if the other dies. That’s the relationship part, but there’s more plot shit surrounding it, such as the mass relay array telescope and what else was found there before the geth returned and retook the telescope, possible cells of Cerberus infiltrating the Initiative and turning into something else in Andromeda, the Benefactor, the reapers, all kinds of fun and games for people in the Heleus Cluster.

Anyway.

I’ve been tinkering with how to format messages sent close to real-time via omnitool. So here’s a section from when they’re still in the Milky Way:

> No, I’m not disparaging your work or you, so you don’t have to send anything.

Lexi attached the document and sent the message off before Thaia could reply in the negative.

> Sent. 

> Fourteen hundred pages? Seriously?

> Diagrams.

> Don’t take this personally, but I’m never opening that file again. However, I’m still not disparaging you or your work. Or krogan aggression because they’re definitely aggressive. But I’ve got too many krogan in my family so I’d rather not think about their virility in any way whatsoever.

> What happened to scientific interest?

> My ability for scientific detachment only goes so far.

> It’s quite insightful.

> Krogan mating diagrams.

> For science.

> That’s it, I’m sending you one of my dissertations.

> Is this a competition?

> No. That would be juvenile and petty.

> …how many have you written? Asking for a friend.

> You just sent me a dissertation that’s fifteen hundred pages long and you’re complaining about my fourteen hundred? Oh, diagrams take up more than half.

> Blueprints, Lexi. Blueprints. If you’re going to disparage my work, at least get the terminology correct.

> I’m convinced you messaged me just so you could antagonize me.

> I would never. I might’ve mentioned your dissertation to my sisters and they might not have believed me. They believed you, by the way. Apparently you’re more trustworthy than their own sister.

> Are they wrong?

> All the time.

> Are they wrong in this instance?

> No. Anyway, I also messaged you to see if you wanted to come over because Khel brought out this container full of old krogan stuff and some of it’s ancient and I thought you might want to look at it. He said something about some of it having been his mother’s. I probably should’ve paid more attention to what he said, but he can ramble sometimes.

> Are there diagrams?

> That was cruel, Lexi. You have no idea how long it will take me to get the images out of my head. So are you in or not?

I’ll go with Thaia since she’s the only active OC I have at the moment.

1. When Thaia was fourteen, her mother told her that she didn’t have to like her stepfather, but she was expected to tolerate him. Thaia replied, “I could tolerate him going through an unexplored relay and never returning.” 

2. When Thaia was also fourteen, she stole all of her stepfather’s left shoes, locked them in a waterproof container, and then dropped said container into an ocean bay near her family’s home. Her mother told her that she couldn’t just destroy all of anyone’s shoes or anyone’s property just because she doesn’t like them. Thaia told her mother: “They aren’t destroyed. If Aulus really wants his shoes back, he can go get them.” Thaia’s stepfather also happened to be turian and was not the exception to the rule of ‘turians can’t swim.’ This was the motivation for the talk where Thaia’s mother asked her to tolerate her stepfather.

3. Thaia once tried to fly a toy model of the Destiny Ascension through the Relay Monument on the Citadel. She was two hundred and one years old at the time, drunk, and encouraged and enabled by her squadmates.

4. Thaia believes that “I take it back, unfuck you” is a valid apology in certain situations.

5. Thaia’s commando squad, due to being part of the Armali’s militia, spent a few years in advanced training that was, for the most part, taught by Matriarch Benezia. Initially, Thaia had a very difficult time paying attention to the biotic technique instruction itself for… reasons.
