TFUI wants you to meet one of the most famous and common hammerheads: the Scalloped Hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini). This shark is also known as the bronze, kidney-headed, or southern hammerhead. As a coastal and semi-oceanic animal, they are found globally in coastal warm temperate and tropical seas.

This shark has a lot of common names. The gummy dogfish, gummy shark, Japanese smooth hound, spotted shark, star-spotted gummy shark, star-spotted shark, star-spotted smooth hound, star-spotted smooth-hound, topes, and hound shark. This Data Deficient (yes, that's what the IUCN has them listed as) is a rare deepwater dogfish that... well, to be honest, we know very little about. Also known as the "Black Gulper Shark," and the "Longnose Gulper Shark," this shark is known in the scientific world as Centrophorus isodon. According to research conducted in 2005, largetooth sawfish (Pristis pristis) move into marine waters after the wet season, and during the wet season enter estuarine or fresh waters to breed (Peverell 2005). You may be wondering what "marine waters" are. Water in a marine system is at or near the full salinity of seawater.
