TASK #3: Mischief Managed

HOUSE: HUFFLEPUFF -- HALFBLOOD

Hufflepuffs value hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play. The house has produced its share of great wizards. Hufflepuffs are known to be dedicated, hardworking, fair, patient, kind, modest, and loyal. Students in Hufflepuff are known to value everyone and treat them as equal.

WAND: PINE WOOD WITH A DRAGON HEARTSTRING CORE, 10 ¼ AND SOLID FLEXIBILITY

PINE: The straight-grained pine wand always chooses an independent, individual master who may be perceived as a loner, intriguing and perhaps mysterious. Pine wands enjoy being used creatively, and unlike some others, will adapt unprotestingly to new methods and spells. The pine wand is one of those that is most sensitive to non-verbal magic.

DRAGON HEARTSTRING CORE: As a rule, dragon heartstrings produce wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner. It is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental.

10 ¼, SOLID FLEXIBILITY: The wands described as hard, rigid, solid, stiff, unbending, and unyielding, are regarded as “rigid wands”. Most wizards and witches who use magic in a more traditional way and are rigorous when taking decisions are chosen by these wands. Hard wands are usually the most difficult to adapt to the user, and the wizards and witches who succeed with these wands are of enviable determination. Rigid and solid wands perform intensely any form of magic they do, and pair well with those who like to do things in their own way. Most wands will be in the range of between nine and fourteen inches.

WAND: 14.5″ vine wood with unicorn hair core, quite flexible flexibility

VINE: The druids considered anything with a woody stem as a tree, and vine makes wands of such a special nature that I have been happy to continue their ancient tradition. Vine wands are among the less common types, and I have been intrigued to notice that their owners are nearly always those witches or wizards who seek a greater purpose, who have a vision beyond the ordinary and who frequently astound those who think they know them best. Vine wands seem strongly attracted by personalities with hidden depths, and I have found them more sensitive than any other when it comes to instantly detecting a prospective match. Reliable sources claim that these wands can emit magical effects upon the mere entrance into their room of a suitable owner, and I have twice observed the phenomenon in my own shop.

UNICORN HAIR: Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard. 

Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing.

PATRONUS: Marsh Harrier

Marsh harriers are medium-sized birds of prey. One hunted to extinction in the United Kingdom, the bird has since begun to rise once more in numbers in that region. Clearly survivors, this raptor Patronus will make sure its caster also survives – the Dementor’s kiss.

HOUSE: Slytherin

Slytherin produces more than its share of Dark wizards, but also turns out leaders who are proud, ambitious and cunning. Merlin is one particularly famous Slytherin.

WAND: 12 1/2″ applewood with dragon heartstring, rigid flexibility

APPLEWOOD: Applewood wands are not made in great numbers. They are powerful and best suited to an owner of high aims and ideals, as this wood mixes poorly with Dark magic. It is said that the possessor of an apple wand will be well-loved and long-lived, and I have often noticed that customers of great personal charm find their perfect match in an applewood wand. An unusual ability to converse with other magical beings in their native tongues is often found among apple wand owners, who include the celebrated author of Merpeople: A Comprehensive Guide to Their Language and Customs, Dylan Marwood.

PATRONUS: Capuchin Monkey

Those who are capable of casting this bubbly and energetic creature may or may not take pleasure in knowing just how much they enjoy their comfort. Give a capuchin an abundance of fresh fruit, others to interact with, and a stimulating environment, and watch its creativity and sense of adventure soar. Beware, the absence of such creature comforts will quickly lead to quarrels, isolation, and an intolerance for others’ good moods.

HOUSE: GRYFFINDOR -- HALFBLOOD

Gryffindor is the house which most values the virtues of courage, bravery and determination. They are known for their bravery, nerve, athleticism, courage, and daring. 

WAND:  CYPRESS WOOD WITH A UNICORN HAIR CORE, 9 ¾ AND SUPPLE FLEXIBILITY

CYPRESS: Cypress wands are associated with nobility. The great medieval wandmaker, Geraint Ollivander, wrote that he was always honoured to match a cypress wand, for he knew he was meeting a witch or wizard who would die a heroic death. Wands of cypress find their soul mates among the brave, the bold and the self-sacrificing: those who are unafraid to confront the shadows in their own and others’ natures.

9 ¾, SUPPLE FLEXIBILITY:  The wands characterized as brittle, quite or fairly bendy, quite or fairly flexible, pliant, supple, and whippy, are considered “flexible wands”. These usually fall in the hands of owners who like to progress quickly in life and face changes without hesitation. Wands ranging from 9 to 10.5 inches are considered shorter than average but are common to be seen. The wizards and witches paired to these wands have a tendency to think well before acting, and their magic style is usually of elegance and neater than others. Owning a commonly small wand may, in some cases, represent that the owner cares a lot for himself or herself, which does not mean they are selfish.

WAND: 14 1/4″ Ash wood with a dragon heartstrong core and brittle flexibility

ASH - The ash wand cleaves to its one true master and ought not to be passed on or gifted from the original owner, because it will lose power and skill. This tendency is extreme if the core is of unicorn. Old superstitions regarding wands rarely bear close examination, but I find that the old rhyme regarding rowan, chestnut, ash and hazel wands (rowan gossips, chestnut drones, ash is stubborn, hazel moans) contains a small nugget of truth. Those witches and wizards best suited to ash wands are not, in my experience, lightly swayed from their beliefs or purposes. However, the brash or over-confident witch or wizard, who often insists on trying wands of this prestigious wood, will be disappointed by its effects. The ideal owner may be stubborn, and will certainly be courageous, but never crass or arrogant.

14 ¼ INCHES - The wands measuring more than 14 inches are very unusual. Wizards and witches who have great self-esteem are preferred for these wands, because these owners mostly seek recognition and like to exhibit their prowess, being very honest about their personalities to everyone around them. They may, however, not consider their own points to be amended in some cases. If these wizards and witches come to accept some characteristics as flaws and learn how to hold them back eventually, the wand will increase in magical efficiency.

These usually fall in the hands of owners who like to progress quickly in life and face changes without hesitation. Brittle, fairly bendy and very flexible wands may seem fragile but the flexibility of their wood allow the magic of the user to assume considerable power, yet they tend to pair with wizards and witches who have doubts about their abilities.

“Buffalos are large, strong-willed mammals that travel in herds. They may seem like quiet, kind animals, but they are easily agitated, especially if they are pushed too far or if someone threatens their herd. So it’s in your best interest not to get on the bad side of one. If this is your Patronus, you’re in luck! Buffalos are very robust (with a shoulder height reaching almost 6 ft!) and can weigh up to 2,200 pounds! Any Dementor seeing that animal charging at it at speeds up to 40 mph would fly off as quickly as possible and never look back!”

WAND

Black Walnut “Less common than the standard walnut wand, that of black walnut seeks a master of good instincts and powerful insight. Black walnut is a very handsome wood, but not the easiest to master. It has one pronounced quirk, which is that it is abnormally attuned to inner conflict, and loses power dramatically if its possessor practises any form of self-deception. If the witch or wizard is unable or unwilling to be honest with themselves or others, the wand often fails to perform adequately and must be matched with a new owner if it is to regain its former prowess. Paired with a sincere, self-aware owner, however, it becomes one of the most loyal and impressive wands of all, with a particular flair in all kinds of charmwork.”

HOGWARTS HOUSE

Slytherin — cunning, ambitious, resourceful, shrewd, determined

Lukas is defined by his ambition and his determination. He has the mind of a Ravenclaw, but it is how he puts his intellect to use that sits him firmly with the serpents. His primary goal is to achieve recognition for his accomplishments in spite of the misfortunes that befell him, and in doing so restore honor to his family name. Even though he was stripped of his childhood dream of becoming a knight, he was resourceful enough to put his other talents to use in a way that he arguably finds more fulfilling. Many Slytherins will be all too familiar with the feeling of a few bad seeds tarnishing their house’s reputation, and that is a reality that Lukas lives with and fights every day. Not that he’s always successful. He can show some of Slytherin’s more negative qualities in his suspicion of everyone outside of his own circle (which is presently nonexistent), and his rough demeanor often leads others to think his ambition and shrewd intellect are being set to nefarious purposes. But beneath it all lies a loyal heart that could attach itself firmly to those who prove themselves worthy of his trust and respect.

Field Mouse

“Generally small in size, field mice have to rely on their speed and wits to survive. Their senses are sharp so as to easily detect their predators, which are abundant. Field mice are incredibly adaptable, able to live wherever they can find shelter and food. You’d be wrong to underestimate the adorable little field mouse Patronus; it will surprise you with its ingenuity and resiliency.”

“... Never forget, though, that one of the most famous Patronuses of all time was a lowly mouse, which belonged to a legendary young wizard called Illyius, who used it to hold off an attack from an army of Dementors single-handedly.”

The first time Lukas casts the Patronus Charm would be the last time if he had his way; such a tiny and fragile Patronus would just add insult to injury in his book. He’d view it as confirmation that he’s weak and a failure, and would hide it for as long as possible. However, he would be surprised to find that it’s a great fit for him. Resourceful and easily underestimated, the field mouse survives by outwitting its opponents and adapting to suit its circumstances just as Lukas has. People overlook him or write him off because of his disability all the time, and are often surprised at just how much he has accomplished in spite of (and because of) that supposed shortcoming. Anyone who thinks him easy prey is stunned to find he is made of much sterner stuff than previously thought, and his ingenuity in devising new weaponry and accessibility always gives him the advantage on his home turf.

Ilvermorny House — Thunderbird “Thunderbirds are defined by their experiences, by their motives, and by the choices they make despite their circumstances. They are soul-searchers, travelers, breakers of boundaries, and those who defy expectations. To a Thunderbird, there are no coincidences or accidents; Thunderbirds can have grounded and self-possessed as well as trailblazing and tumultuous personalities.”

WAND: 12″ Acacia wood with a unicorn hair core and quite flexible flexibility

ACACIA - A very unusual wand wood, which I have found creates tricky wands that often refuse to produce magic for any but their owner, and also withhold their best effects from all but those most gifted. This sensitivity renders them difficult to place, and I keep only a small stock for those witches or wizards of sufficient subtlety, for acacia is not suited to what is commonly known as ‘bangs-and-smells’ magic. When well-matched, an acacia wand matches any for power, though it is often underrated due to the peculiarity of its temperament.

12 INCHES - Most wands range from 9 to 14 inches, and those in between 10.5 and 12.5 inches are considered averagely sized. In contrast to what many think, owning a wand with average length does not mean the wizard or witch have average powers and would never triumph in life. Most accomplished figures in history of magic were paired to averagely sized wands. It is because these wands usually seek owners who control their instincts and calculate their acts, which makes them use their magic in appropriate ways.

QUITE FLEXIBLE FLEXIBILITY - The wands characterized as brittle, quite or fairly bendy, quite or fairly flexible, pliant, supple, and whippy, are considered “flexible wands”. These usually fall in the hands of owners who like to progress quickly in life and face changes without hesitation. Brittle, fairly bendy and very flexible wands may seem fragile but the flexibility of their wood allow the magic of the user to assume considerable power, yet they tend to pair with wizards and witches who have doubts about their abilities. Pliant wands can adapt to new situations quicker than others, being favoured by owners who seek for new methods of using magic. The wizards and witches best suited for supple and whippy wands are adaptive in a more cautiously manner, and even if the supple wand and its owner may take a little longer to learn from each other, their results are usually the most reliable.

PATRONUS: West Highland Terrier

West Highland White Terriers, or Westies as they’re affectionately known, are full of character. When they’re not keeping themselves busy with their entertaining antics, these dogs are highly alert and sensitive to change. Those who are a West Highland Terrier are some of the most friendly people you could ever meet. They have a brave soul and a heart of gold, and are very reliable. They can often sense the change in the atmosphere before any witch or wizard is aware a Dementor may be close, meaning they are always ready when you may call on them for help.

RARE PATRONUS: Fire-Dwelling Salamander

This Patronus represents a person that was born and/or has lived under pressing circumstances but overcomes every obstacle, getting stronger each day. People with this Patronus love challenges and are good at handling stress.”
