Paul Dixon-Rovia had been married to Daryl for...well, they didnât really keep track anymore. They never had a wedding and hadnât felt the need to. Daryl was still very shy and their relationship had moved so fast in the beginning. It was hard to imagine, back in the day, that theyâd be married this long.
It was rushed, their relationship, and Paul knew that...he assumed Daryl did too.
Most couples didnât get married within the first few months of their relationship beginning, but they did.
They exchanged rings on a run and just called themselves married. Theyâd been in the midst of the war, always wondering if they would see tomorrow or if Negan would arrive and take Daryl away from him. They didnât have time to take things slow.
But things were peaceful now, for the most part.
And, as usually, it all started with a question from their son.
âHow come you donât got any picture of you and dadâs wedding?â Richie asked, holding up the comic book heâd been reading. Paul squinted at the cover of the comic book and read in big letters GIANT-SIZE AVENGERS #4 and it had a picture of Scarlet Witch and the Vision on the cover.
âRichie, Vision is essentially a toaster,â Paul deadpanned, âI can find you a better wedding comic. X-Men #130 is better,â he said before going back to his notes.
Richie climbed up in the kitchen chair across from him and grabbed his hand, âYou got a ring and so does daddy,â he said, messing with the shiny blue and silver ring on his left hand as he wrote with his right, âHow come thereâs no pictures?â
âBecause your dads think they donât need a wedding,â Violette said, coming in with her arms full of fabric, âI disagree completely, Richie, donât you?â
Paul narrowed his eyes as her as she went back to her room and sighed, âRichie, when your dad and I got married, it was a very...busy time. We didnât have a wedding.â
âWhy didnât you have one after?â Richie tiled his head.
âWeâre always busy,â Paul laughed.
Richie looked down at the papers, âWell, youâre workinâ on the expansion and Aunt Maggie says thatâs not happenâ âtil after winter. Why not right now?â
Paul laughed weakly, âRichie-â
âWhatâs goinâ on?â Daryl asked, walking in, Meredith trailing behind him and Dog trailing behind her. He leaned on the counter, grabbing a jar of peanut butter and a spoon.
âYou guys should have a wedding,â Richie said bluntly.
Daryl choked on his peanut butter and Meredith handed him a water bottle.
âUncle Aaron could be your best man!â Richie added, âWe could pick flowers too!â
âWeâll talk about this later,â Paul laughed, âYou two have homework, get on it. Dinner will be done soon.â
The two groaned and Meredith mumbled a âlook what you didâ to her brother as they raced to their room.
Paul laughed quietly, âRichie gets those social skills from you, yâknow,â he pointed out, taking the spoon from his husband and leaning beside him, taking his own bite of peanut butter, âYou shouldnât do this, it spoils your dinner,â he shrugged.
Daryl sighed, looking out the window, âYou ever regret it?â
âHmm?â Paul asked, still eating the peanut butter.
âNot havinâ a wedding?â Daryl asked, âGettinâ it in writinâ and everything. âSpecially with the new ID system Maggieâs workinâ on...might be good to have somethinâ performed by someone official.â
Paul raised an eyebrow, âWhy, Mr. Dixon-Rovia, are you proposing to me?â
Daryl rolled his eyes, âPretty sure I already did that,â he sighed, âBut, uh...guess Iâm proposinâ we have a wedding.â
Paul sighed, looking down at the ring on his finger, âMaybeâŠâ he trailed off, âBut letâs not tell everyone just yet. Hilltop has a habit of going absolutely insane over things like this. Letâs tell them slowly.â
âMY DADS ARE HAVING A WEDDING!â Richie yelled outside.
Paul groaned, rubbing his face with his hands.
âReally? About time!â Aaron laughed.
âWHAT?!â Tara and Maggie screeched together.
âOh my god,â Alex groaned.
âCongratulations,â Harlan added, shoving the nurse slightly.
âWeâll provide the alcohol for it!â Louie cheered, high-fiving Larry.
âOh, I have tons of instruments. I could help with the music,â Luke added.
âOh, the garden would be perfect to have it in,â Bertie added.
âCan I do your hair?â Enid asked Paul.
âOkay, everyone just...slow down,â Paul said quickly, putting his hands up, âWe havenât even planned this-â
âYou donât need to,â Maggie stood up, âIâve had it planned for years. All the plans are in a file in my office. Weâll send scouts for the communities and have it this weekend.â
âWhat?â Paul demanded.
âYou have no idea how long I waited for you to let someone in,â Maggie told him quietly, âSeeing you happy? It made me happy,â she smiled at him.
Paul smiled, pulling her into a hug, âYouâre insane.â
âThank you,â Maggie said simply before pulling away, âOkay, people, weâve been expecting this for eleven years, letâs move it!â she yelled before stalking away.
Richie and Paul stared after her, both with matching raised eyebrows. Paul looked over at Daryl and laughed weakly, grabbing his husbandâs hand.
