The latest pretty. ♥
No I have not finished reading it.
But Imin, Tata and Enel have personalities as do Ingwe, Finwe and Elwe and this is yay! I also love the idea of the Eldar making a pact to not have kids on the March and then a group of them decide "nah, I want kids NOW" so they have to stop the entire march to wait for the kids to grow up.
We also have Ingwe with three kids all born before the march, Finwe and Miriel were together but not married. Elmo is mentioned as being born on the March and we have more text ghosts:
"When Oromë asked for ambassadors, Imin, Tata and Enel were against the whole business, and refused to go. Ingwe was the eldest son of Ilion, who was in a direct line from Iminyë in the 4th generation (all having been first children and sons); sc. great-grandson: he was tall, beautiful, beloved by the Imilië [Vanyar], more given to thought than the arts. His spouse was Ilwen (born FA 539). His first child was a son, Ingwil, his second a daughter Indis." And a third child born in 1031 mentioned earlier. A later note puts Indis as eldest.
Yes, now there are more text ghosts but yay for names!
We also have: "Ingwe had curling golden hair. Finwe (and Míriel) had long dark hair, so had Fëanor and all the Noldor, save by intermarriage which did not often take place between clans, except among the chieftains, and then only after settlement in Aman. Only Finwe's second son by Indis had fair hair, and this remained generally characteristic of his descendants, notably Finrod. Elwe and Olwe had very pale hair, almost white. Melian was dark, and so was Luthien." (p. 186)
Explain Nerdanel, Tolkien! Explain!!!! Don't leave me here!
I also adore the fact that the First Elves are the Avari and were against the whole matter of Valinor in the first place.
I also see where Finwe's family got their rebellious streak from as Finwe finally speaks.
There is also a mention of an earlier wife for Celeborn if Tolkien had held to the idea of Amroth being his son and an idea of remarriage if one spouse deserted another. (p.152) I now very much want the story of this lady and why she left!!!!!
So, a few interesting bits and no I am not reading too much into the Elf sex as of yet; give me chance the book only arrived two days ago I have to scan read first. 😉
