Abandoned but still alive

Picture rails aren’t perfect and they can be a little fiddly to use, but they have the fantastic advantage of not requiring you to make new holes in your walls every time you rearrange your art.

I have a picture rail on the wall in my apartment, but have for a long time have wondered if an upper Vitsoe shelf would work like a picture rail and allow one to hang a cable down behind. My standard picture rails (not shown) from Systematic Art don’t work here; the geometry of the hook is too small.

I started looking for something simple and quick to test and settled on this type:

This inexpensive set on Amazon works surprisingly but did need two small modifications (quickly done with a big pair of pliers): flatten 1. the smaller part of the hook (kept the steel cable from popping out too often) and 2. the hook from which the artwork hangs (otherwise it pushed picture awkwardly away from the wall).
