> Lore: the swamp isnât here for you
âYouâve survived in the swamp since you were a hatchling, havenât you?â Karno said.
Gwaihir nodded. âOh, forever and ever.â
Karno sighed. âSee, thatâs why I respect you. Even considering that youâre like this, you know how to manage yourself. If you didnât, you would be dead.â
Gwaihir tilted her head. âWhat do you mean by âlike thisâ? Oh, listen to that frog -- isnât it beautiful? Thatâs a river warden. They suffocate their prey before they eat them, which some call cruel, but I wonder if itâs truly crueler than being eaten alive.â
âLike that,â Kuros said. âWhat does the frog matter?â
Gwaihir frowned. âWhat do you mean? Everything matters. Itâs all part of the swamp.â
âThe swamp is an obstacle.â Karno stretched his neck. âItâs here to challenge us, to pit us against itself so that we may prove our mettle. But the frog? It isnât a threat to us; it isnât dinner. So it doesnât matter.â
âThe swamp isnât here for you.â Gwaihirâs voice turned suddenly cold, even angry. Karno had never heard her like this. âIt doesnât exist to serve as an âobstacleâ in your little schemes. It doesnât care what you want. It is for itself. And the frog is part of it. If you donât respect the little pieces, you donât respect the swamp. And if you donât respect the swamp, it will kill you.â
Karno almost got the sense that sheâd wanted to use a different pronoun there.
