NUMBER ONE RECORD, no. 14. The Roches, The Roches. It astonished me when I learned within the last year or so that Robert Fripp of all people produced this. In “Audio Verité,” and it does just put their voices and harmonies Right There. Right. There. So many moments on this album that just make your face crack with a grin. And then so many moving and melancholy moments. You should listen to it. I recommended it to a friend who I always feel like I’m forcing things on, so I didn’t push it all that hard, but just go get it off Spotify and make sure you play “We,” “Hammond Song,” “Mr. Sellack,” “The Troubles,” and “The Train.” And “Quitting Time.” I think you’ll want to listen to all of it but you can’t miss those songs. Can’t miss ‘em. Don’t miss ‘em. My sister-in-law and her partner got to see them in a living room in New Jersey and for years that night’s setlist was on their kitchen wall. They’re the kind of act that compels you to travel to New Jersey. Paul Simon had them sing background vocals on a song. And yet, who knows about them? They should be on the rotation of great sounds of the seventies, but here I am. Going on about a band you never heard of.
