Five infrared images from yesterday's excursion to the Lower Cathedral Valley area of Capitol Reef National Park. The two prominent monoliths seen below -- the Temple of the Moon and the Temple of the Sun -- as well as the towers and spires that abut the western cliffs of the valley, are comprised of fine-grained red, orange and ocher sands of the Entrada formation. The color of these "cathedrals" are the result of iron oxide. Originally laid done some 160 million years ago -- in the middle of the Jurassic era -- the Entrada was formed from extensive tidal flats that covered most of the region, resulting in a large amount of sandy mud deposition.
