Il tempio del dio semitico Bel o Baal mostra una sintesi degli stili artistici e architettonici dell' antico vicino oriente da un lato e del mondo greco-romano dall' altro. La struttura, dedicata nel 32 d.C., ospitava le statue di culto della triade palmirena: Baalshamin, il dio della Luna Aglibol e il dio del Sole Yarhibol. L'articolazione della pianta del tempio era tipica della cultura vicino-orientale. In epoca bizantina il tempio fu trasformato in una chiesa cristiana. The temple of the Semitic god Bel o Baal shows a synthesis of the artistic and architectural styles of the ancient Near East on one side and of the Greco-Roman world on the other. The structure, dedicated in 32 AD, housed the cult statues of the palmyrene triad: Baalshamin, the god of the Moon Aglibol and the god of the Sun Yarhibol. The articulation of the temple plant was typical of the Near Eastern. The vertical architectural elements, instead, like the use of the Corinthian order, were typical of the Hellenistic style of the Greco-Roman world. In the Byzantine era, the temple was transformed into a Christian church.
