While Toph had known that joining the group wasn’t going to be all sunshine and daisies, feeling the Avatar get beaten into unconsciousness was a pretty big reality check. Their last encounter with the Fire Nation stayed with her long after they’d beat a hasty retreat, occupying her thoughts as she tended to Aang’s wounds.
The silence didn’t bother her, and actually she was starting to grow lulled by the crackling of the campfire when he broke the calm. For a moment, she stopped what she was doing, surprised by his words. Of course she’d help him; that’s what friends do.
Instead of saying all this, she snorted. A smirk played on her lips as she tugged playfully hard at the bandage she was applying.
“ Maybe don’t get your butt handed to you like that again, and we’ll call it even. You didn’t have to deal with Katara while you were out... it was a nightmare. ”
