HE WAS WARNED before he started his trek. warned that it was too cold, too perilous for one to travel alone--and as underdressed as he is. concerned villagers told him he didnât have a sufficient inventory, that he wasnât prepared to travel so far into the winter wasteland on his own, but he didnât care, and a single glare thrown their way was enough to shut them up. thank the gods for that.
what did they have to complain about anyway? it was their fault he was heading outside the village in the first place.. well, in a way. in truth, it was a complete accident that he happened to stumble upon ( and eavesdrop ) on a conversation between locals. at first, there was nothing worth noting about their idle chatter, almost driving him away in search of something more interesting, but the mention of a particular mountain caught his attention. to be more specific, a cave residing within the mountain.
rubrum hole, they had called it; a place not recommended for travelers to explore. not recommended for weak travelers at least. if it were him, it wouldnât be a problem to get there and back, but he had no intention of going to such a faraway place, even colder than eidolon itself. that is, until he heard something about strange, glowing crystals. crystals that emitted a red light, it seemed, which could only mean one thing--dust. fire dust, if he had to guess, sat untouched in the cave due to the lack of visitors, ready for the taking--for him to take it specifically since no one else was going to.
which brings him to the present, at the bottom of the mountain. the journey wasnât nearly as bad as everyone made it seem, but it was long, leaving him in the dark despite heading out at sunrise, slightly fatigued, and cold. painfully cold, but the thought of finally, finally acquiring some form of ammunition for his boots after it mysteriously disappeared is enough to distract him from it. even more important was that dust is familiar, perhaps the only familiar thing in this frozen tundra that heâll ever see.
⌠at least, thatâs what he thought before he entered the cave.
itâs funny, how life surprises you--or it would be, if it was a pleasant surprise. this is anything but funny.Â
crystals line every inch of the walls and ceilings as he was told they would, illuminating the dark with a bright red glow--and standing in the middle of it all is a pale figure he unfortunately recognizes. judging by the expression on her face, the feeling is mutual.Â
â youâre joking, â he states, disbelief in his tone. of all the people to find in a cave that wasnât supposed to be occupied, of course it was one of the more well-adept members of team rwby. he recalls his defeat at the hands of her and her comrades not too long ago, a wound to his pride that remains fresh in his mind--and while he doubts sheâs as strong on her own as she is with her team, he isnât foolish enough to underestimate her after witnessing her skills firsthand. besides, thereâs a very probable chance she isnât alone, that her team lies deeper within the cave. the possibility has his teeth gritting, anxiousness building in his chest.
â what are you doing here? shouldnât you be painting your nails or something with your little friends? â
