what makes these books so special is honestly the character development wrapped in this incredibly compelling sci-fi worldbuilding. murderbot starts out as this sarcastic, deadpan narrator who's basically a murder machine with anxiety, and watching them grow throughout the series while maintaining that perfect dry humor??? chef's kiss the relationships they build feel earned and genuine, and the sci-fi elements are creative and immersive without being overwhelming.

system collapse picks up after the events of network effect and follows murderbot as they navigate corporate conspiracies, rescue missions, and all the interpersonal drama that comes with caring about people (even though murderbot would NEVER admit to caring). it's thrilling, it's funny, it's got heart, and it's impossible to put down.
