Gold in the Alley
Coach Stone noticed details.
Bad posture. Loose form. Untied laces. A bro trying to skip cooldown by walking too confidently toward the exit.
So when he stepped out behind the Golden Army gym and saw Ambrose standing in the alley in a full gold tracksuit, Coach stopped dead.
Not because Ambrose looked bad.
That was the problem.
Ambrose looked sharp. Too sharp. Gold jacket open at the chest, matching gold track pants catching the alley light, chains bright against tattooed skin, platinum hair perfect, expression calm like he had meant to be seen.
Coach narrowed his eyes.
Ambrose normally dressed like expensive trouble with a chav accent and a credit limit.
This was different.
This was Gold.
Coach said nothing at first.
Ambrose smiled.
“Evening, Coach.”
Coach’s jaw moved once.
“Ambrose.”
The alley hummed with distant traffic and gym ventilation. Somewhere inside, weights clanged. Somewhere much closer, Coach’s suspicion began doing reps.
“New outfit?” Coach asked.
Ambrose glanced down at the gold tracksuit like he had forgotten he was wearing it.
“Something like that.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It was not meant to be.”
Coach folded his arms. The black rubber singlet shifted under the alley light, gold insignia catching at his chest. His cap shadowed his eyes, but not enough to hide the look.
The look meant: explain before this becomes a drill.
Ambrose only smirked.
Coach immediately thought of Wells.
Because of course he did.
Wells had a known weakness for shiny things, bad decisions, and Ambrose standing too close to either.
If Ambrose was suddenly wearing Gold behind the gym, then Wells either needed to know, needed to be warned, or had already done something and forgotten to report it.
Possibly all three.
Coach looked Ambrose up and down one more time.
Gold tracksuit.
Calm smile.
No explanation.
Unacceptable.
“I should tell Wells,” Coach said.
Ambrose’s smile sharpened.
“That sounds dramatic.”
“It sounds necessary.”
Coach paused.
“And possibly Captain Brody.”
For the first time, Ambrose’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Coach caught it.
He always caught details.
Ambrose adjusted one sleeve of the gold tracksuit and gave a smooth little shrug.
“Do what you think is best.”
Coach stared at him.
“I will.”
He turned back toward the gym door, already planning the report.
Behind him, Ambrose remained in the alley, shining gold where he absolutely should not have been, smiling like trouble had changed uniforms.
Coach reached for his phone.
Wells first.
Brody next.
Because some things were too suspicious to leave in the dark.
