A Safe Harbour is a short documentary film directed by Leyla Bile about the history of the Somali sailor’s community in Cardiff, Wales. In this lyrical piece Bile explores the unique community of East African transplants who have lived in this small community since the late 19th Century.
In The Abyss Christina Fonthes creates an experimental self-portrait. It is “diasporic, and future-now; it explores the theme of my identity as a Congolese-British Queer woman,” writes Fonthes. “The piece is based on a poem that I wrote shortly after having faced trauma as a result of homophobia from close family members… The Abyss, in short, is about embracing the darkness to survive,” writes Fonthes.
Jaula Dorada is a fiction short film created by director Fernando Estif Abundes Gonzales from Phoenix, Arizona. Jaula Dorada is the story of a lonely Christmas morning faced by a family missing their father. Abundes wrote and directed this piece after he himself was released from immigration detention. Abundes is a human rights activist and teamed up with a youth media collective Puente Visión to create this film noir, poetic piece.
Directors Teddy Goitom, Benjamin Taft and Senay Berhe of Stocktown Film are showing a segment of their exciting documentary series Afripedia, which highlights the new generation of African creatives. In Afripedia: Ghana, Wiyaala they feature Wiyaala an outspoken and androgynous music star and motorcycle racer from Ghana.
