Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer - Console Fighting Games of 1995
Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer (1995) is Technos Japan’s stylish, anime‑driven 2D fighter set in a post‑apocalyptic future where Tokyo has been destroyed and society rebuilt on a man‑made island. When violence erupts at the National Belnar Institute, new transfer student Isato Kaiza steps forward — secretly the transforming hero Gowcaizer, empowered by an energy‑manifesting stone. His mission is to uncover the source of the island’s corruption and restore peace to Japan.
The game features ten playable fighters, each with unique abilities and flashy, manga‑inspired movesets. Its standout mechanic is the “Trade System”: after defeating an opponent, the player can permanently absorb one of their special moves, but only one can be held at a time — choosing a new one erases the previous. Defeating a character’s mirror match amplifies the absorbed ability, adding a layer of strategy to the tournament progression. With its vibrant anime presentation, transformation themes, and experimental mechanics, Gowcaizer stands as one of the more distinctive and ambitious fighters on the Neo Geo hardware. Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer was also adapted into a 3 episode OVA that released in 1996 and was directed by Masami Obari, who created the concept and character designs for both the game and OVA. An English language version would also be released in 1997 by U.S. Manga Corps.
