macOS moves on from Intel Macs
Apple’s upcoming macOS 27 update will no longer support Intel-based Macs, marking a clear cutoff point for the company’s transition to its own Apple Silicon chips. This means devices powered by Intel processors won’t receive the latest operating system, even if they are still functional.
The shift has been expected for a while, as Apple has spent the past few years moving its entire Mac lineup to custom M-series chips. Dropping Intel support allows Apple to focus on optimizing performance and features specifically for its newer hardware.
For users still on Intel Macs, the machines will continue to work and receive some level of security updates for a limited time, but they’ll gradually fall behind in terms of new features and software compatibility.
This change effectively closes a long chapter that began when Apple first switched to Intel processors back in 2006.
Comment: Feels like one of those quiet milestones where something huge ends, but most people only notice when their device suddenly feels old.
