When I took the time to set out to get to know myself, along the way I gained an understanding of my father as well as his Afghani culture and the reason he raised us the way he did. His childhood reality was completely different from mine, he was raised in an orphanage and raised us the way he knew how. As I took all this in, I came to the realization that someone else’s experience can’t control my life. I can’t live in fear of disappointing my father because his beliefs did not align with mine. After taking the trip to Iraq I was able to forgive and be set free from the binds that kept me. Fear can take many forms, it can spur from others expectations of you that keep you from doing the things you truly want or reaching your goal. I was told that I couldn’t behave a certain way or do certain things by my father because I am a woman. I understood that that’s what he was raised to believe, I chose to believe otherwise.
