This year, I had two portraits in the "Command Presence" gallery exhibit. This one held a very special place of honor in that show and is particularly dear to me. Last year, following a terrible tragedy, a co-worker, his wonderful family, and the community as a whole, suffered the loss of a young man who meant so much to so many. I was approached by members of the NBPD detective division, which is his father's unit, and asked if I could do a special gift for the family. They put together funding for all of the materials and framing. I was privileged to be asked to create the art. Devin Carrier was a rising star. A mixed martial arts fighter who will always be remembered for his demeanor in and out of the octagon. For that reason, and to capture his spirit as a warrior, a photograph of him in a fighting stance was chosen. The photographer who shot the picture I used for reference was Patrick Sullivan, and I'd like to thank him for his assistance as well as permission. No matter how many times I reveal a drawing, I always experience anxiety in terms of wondering how it will be received. After all, I still consider myself to be an untrained amateur, always hoping to improve with each piece. The Carrier family could not have been more appreciative, and I knew when Devin's mother put her arms around me for a hug that I likely had gotten more right than I did wrong.
