Affiliated Geeks officially disbanded after the final GISHWHES, and is no longer active as a team.
However, many previous Affiliated Geeks gished again this year, and you can find our work spread across teams. Primarily, a group of us and new friends formed the team Geekquel, which you can find on Tumblr @geekquel where we will shortly start sharing this year’s accomplishments! Help Team Affiliated Geeks do something great and wonderful this Gishwhes season - help us Change a Life!
Gishwhes is gathering funds to maintain a ballet school in Zolani, a township in South Africa, that is marked by extreme poverty and inequality. For children growing up there, the future holds little hope. But this school has done much more than teach ballet classes. Through ballet, Fiona Sargeant, its founder, has not just given the young students purpose, self-discipline and exercise, but through her selfless work, lives have been changed. Some of her former students are now dancing on scholarships in New York and London. What Fiona has given the children of Zolani through her ballet school is hope.
In 2016, at the age of just 51, Fiona was diagnosed with cancer. In February of this year, Fiona received the devastating news that her cancer was inoperable. With this fundraiser, we will grant her dying wish. (She has no idea we are going to do this! We are going to surprise her with this colossal random act of kindness at the end of the Hunt! So if anyone reading this is a friend of hers, PLEASE don't share your post or tell her about this until AFTER the Hunt! )

I (the team member running this blog) am planning a little something - Fellow Gisher Appreciation Week - in which I hope to queue up a few items from other teams that particularly appeal to me (and I will ask around with the other members of Affiliated Geeks too). I’ve noticed that Gishwhes items tend to get very few notes, and this is a small way of celebrating the incredible art all of you created. The tag is probably going to be #2016 gisher appreciation.
