When I grow up....
I have known what I wanted to spend my life doing since I was a little girl. I wanted three things in life…
1. I wanted to get married, be a wife 2. I wanted to be a mother 3. I wanted to be a teacher
Getting married…I kinda let this dream go. When I came out, some years ago, marriage equality was so far out of reach. The relationships I was in, before this current one, were not going anywhere. When I met my wife, I quickly knew she was the one I was going to spend the rest of my life with. We were married in 2014. I’m a wife in the truest way I could ever be. Finally allowing myself to be who I am, and meeting my wife by chance has been the best experience of my life! I have always dreamed of being a mother. It was what I was waiting for. Hoping for. Dreaming of. My dreams of having children were ripped away from me when I had to have a hysterectomy when I was 23. I grieved for the children that I would never carry or hold. I didn’t give up on my dream, but I didn’t have much hope either. I became a mother slowly and overtime. It happened as a 7 year old girl made my role in her life very clear
This girl has made me a mother. She has shown me so much about myself, about love and about parenting. She makes me laugh, and is sensitive to my tears. There are frustrating moments (obviously) but they are eclipsed by the love and laughter that we share as a family. My family completes me. It is such a beautiful love, and something I never imagined would be mine. Mother daughter aprons. Snuggles. Being her guest of honor at a parents sweetheart dance. My first mother’s day card is a massive card filled with a 7 year olds message to me, as her other mother. I still have it. My desire to be a teacher has been present ever since I was a little girl. I have pushed that dream back, far out of the way due to life. A large part of that is my physical limitations. I have struggled with them, daily, for the last 7 years. My beautiful wife and I have opened our home and are caring for some of the most amazing children. We have the honor of teaching, nurturing and having fun (and lots of laughing) with the kids while their parents are at work. We dedicated our extra bedroom to be our classroom. We have loads of books, toys and art supplies. The walls are covered in child made masterpieces. Much like my other dreams, being a teacher doesn’t look how I thought it would, but I believe this is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.
