The teaching abuse doesn’t end
It’s been three months since I left my job as a teacher. In those three months, I have been welcomed back into the fold of rational adults and saw a professional for my depression. It’s been good and I’ve started to enjoy life once more. However, it’s not been all smooth sailing. I still get shit from other teachers for leaving. Really thoughtless comments such as, “How could you do this to us?” and “Why are you so selfish?” have been thrown at me several times. One of them by the school board themselves. One parent reached out to me and asked, “Don’t you think you could have made it to the end of the season before you decided to quit?”
I am honestly baffled by a lot of the thoughtlessness happening. I use to think teachers were amazing and would have bent over backward to help them out. Seeing their reactions to my choice to choose my mental health over my profession has allowed me to see these professionals for what they really are: fucking insane.Â
The job is hard, I know. I’ve been there. I know what it is like to work long hours for little pay and endure abuse from students, parents, and admin. But I realize the worse of it comes from other teachers... and it makes me so sad. We created this environment and continue to make it worse. At some point, it will all implode and then where will we be?
