Week 4: Teacher Tips š”
Last weekās winner: Number Talks
š„ 1. The Teacher is a Learner
You may find as a teacher, it can be seen as weakness if you donāt know something. Children feel the exact same most of the time! So show them that itās okay not to know the answer all the time (even as an adult). Itās inspiring for the pupils to see that becoming a successful adult isnāt so far out of reach.Ā
š„ 2. Read childrenās books!
After reading āWonderā, I now see why the university was so keen to get us reading childrenās literature. In Wonderās case you look through the lens of a student and it is deeply inspiring to read. It also helps you relate to children more by being able to talk about stories children may know. Ā
š„ 3. Celebrate PROGRESS, not finished work
It may be tempting to judge a pupilās ability based on the worksheets they are completing, but you shouldnāt do that! Children will often seek challenges (manageable ones) so this is why you be happy to see a child improve from week-to-week even if they are not ticking all the boxes right away.
Some other strategiesā¦
How didĀ āweā get thereĀ - as a teacher try not to single out someone by saying,Ā āyouā. Instead, when asking or answering a questions encourage the other children by usingĀ āweā in the sentence. It builds the relationship you have with your class and takes the pressure off of the person answering.Ā
Counting by 1s could be the reason a child is falling behind - as you can imagine, the larger the number, the longer it is going to take to count when answering sums. When going through sums, encourage children to find the more effective answer as some methods are slower and this might demotivate the children.Ā
Creativity outsideĀ - On my outdoor learning course, we learned that you can make art and be creative with just about anything. It can be a really freeing experience for children to express themselves. Picking up a pile of leaves and seeing it morph into something youāre proud of is actually very rewarding believe it or not.
Asking questions while readingĀ - a simple,Ā āwhatās going to happen next?ā will keep children engaged as well as build their skills [in the exampleās case, prediction skills]
Make your success criteria with the pupilsĀ - if you AND your pupils create the success criteria, you and your pupils will have an element of shared understanding.
Tea Party at Number 10Ā - Ā a great activity for counting which shows the termĀ ābridging through tenā in action. Children when given a sum have to jump to each lillypad and pit stop at the multiples of 10.Ā
Hope this helps!

When we treat a man as he is, we make him worse than he is; when we treat him as if he already were what he potentially could be, we make him what he should be.

What's in my study bag? The lazy edition
~(For people who canāt be bothered today.) A list of things you may find useful to have with you when at school/college/uni/library or just in general, all cheap~ ā¢Hand sanitiser- keep yourself clean and hygienic (especially bc public places usually run out v quick) ā¢Notebook- A4, for jotting down detailed lengthy notes. Thereās more space = same topic can stay on the same page ā¢Pen, pencil and ruler- donāt be the someone whoās used to asking the person next to them for stationary. What happens if they donāt have it either? Atleast carry the bear minimum ā¢sticky notes - you might not want to permanently write on a library book so itās good to stick a few notes here & there which you can copy out later ā¢USB- donāt own a laptop or canāt be bothered to lug yours around campus? Save all your stuff on it and voila use it in the school computer. Make sure you have a key ring attached so it doesnāt get lost ā¢Lotion: Keep your hands pampered after all the typing and writing ā¢Diary- keep track of all the dates and places you need to be @ ā¢pencil case: literally to keep all this stuff together
Theatre teacher tip
Start collecting bobby pins NOW. Because you will need literally thousands. Every actor onstage has to wear their hair up so we can see their face. I mean let's do the math. Let's say you're doing a musical with a cast of 20 (which is small). Let's assume 10 of those 20 are girls (likely more). Each of those girls would wear an average of 10 bobby pins. That's 100 bobby pins for just ONE show night. Not to mention you'll only get 50 of them back. And safety pins, you'll need so many safety pins.
