My Hot Drink Routine
It may or may not come as a surprise, but as a rule, I don’t generally drink a whole lot of cold drinks. Aside from the occasional smoothie, and mixer, most of my liquid consumption comes in the form of a hot beverage. It’s warm, it helps quench your thirst (sometimes) much better than a cold drink would, and it comes in such a wide variety.
I generally start the day with either a cup of black Millicano coffee, or a regular cup of English tea. I should point out here that I actually normally drink a decent sized glass of water, especially when I’m getting up before 9. It just helps to hydrate you before you start filling your body with caffeine. I accompany this with a scroll though the BBC News app, and give myself a moment to get myself up to date.
As the day goes on, I tend to switch to something that doesn’t require milk. It varies from season to season, with green tea (specifically Clipper in brand, if you’re curious) being the most prevalent all year round. In the summer however, I am very prone to turning to a decent cup of fruit tea (anything with apple or mango hits the spot just right.)
As the day slowly moves into evening, I’m pulled to the kinds of tea that are most aromatic. I’m a big advocate for creating a lovely bubble around yourself when you sit down in the evening. This winter I’ve been happily settling down with a warm cup of Chai. Sometimes I add milk, sometimes I opt for the the more subtle milk-less taste, but with or without, it’s a truly warming option.
And when my brain won’t shut off, or maybe I’ve drunk one too many caffeinated beverages, I’ll brew myself up some Clipper Sleep Easy that just relaxes you enough to send you right off. Although I would warn you, you may struggle to wake yourself up if you have an early engagement the next day.
Now this routine is by no means set in concrete. It changes from season to season, and sometimes even day to day. Besides, my weekly routine doesn’t really make space for anything to set in concrete. Being a student is a haphazard business, but I find making time for these little cups of warmth throughout my day just gives me five minutes to bring me back to myself and give me a better outlook for the rest of the day.
After all, there’s nothing worse than being thirsty.
