3rd January - What is your aim for 2022?

In terms of my life goals for 2022, I am just trying to find a work/life balance so that I can continue work from home but also spend lots of time with my baby despite being very busy with work. I would like to incorporate fun activities into our time together and to take him to fun places. I am also aiming at getting more sleep...

For my Japanese goals in 2022, I don't really make any concrete goals. I've tried doing that - complete x chapters of a textbook, finish x books, learn x grammar points. But with my life consumed by home and work, that's just not possible for me. I also don't really know what level I fall under. Probably between N3 and (low) N2? So I don't make obscure goals like achieve JLPT X by the end of the year (no time to study for the JLPT either lol).

So, the goals I have are much more broad and vague. Goals like:

Spend 10 minutes per day studying Japanese

Learn one new vocabulary word a day

Review 5 kanji a day

Learn one new kanji a day

Spend 30 minutes per week studying grammar

Have someone correct my written Japanese when possible

These goals fit in my lifestyle, and since I have a solid foundation in Japanese, they help me to continue to improve and not to lose any of the skill I already have. I also spend time reading and speaking in Japanese daily with my husband and son. I would love to try to read some books in Japanese, but instead of making it a goal, I just try to fit it into my daily life.

1月3日 - 2022年の目的は何ですか？

2022年の生活の目的と言えば、仕事と家の生活の良いバランスを作ろうと思います。忙しくても在宅勤務を続いてる間に息子と過ごす時間も大切にしようとします。一緒に過ごすときに楽しいアクティビティをやったり楽しいところに連れて行ったりしたいと思います。後、もうちょっと眠りたいと思います。

日本語の勉強の目的と言えば、あんまり具体的な目的がありません。昔は具体的な目的を作りましたが、今はそんな時間がありません。例えば教科書の〇〇章を終わらせて、〇〇冊本を読んで、文法の〇〇個を学ぶことするのは具体的な目的ですね。今はそういう目的は私に無理ですが。それとも、自分の日本語は何級だと分かりません。JLPTのN3かN2かもしれませんが、年末までにJLPTの〇〇になりたいとか目的を作りません。JLPTの試験の勉強時間もないだろうし（笑）

そして、自分の日本語の目的は曖昧になりました。例えば：

毎日、日本語を10分勉強する

毎日、単語を1つを覚える

毎日、漢字を5字を復習する

毎日、漢字を1字を覚える

毎週、文法を30分勉強する

日本語の論文を日本人に直して貰う

1st January - Happy New Year! What did you learn in the past year?

I learned that despite meticulous planning, things will not turn out the way I expect them to. I also learned how to be flexible and to find the good in the midst of things going wrong. I also learned that including even just 5-10 minutes of Japanese study into my day helps me progress so much more than only studying sporadically and "when I have time" (jk I have no free time looool).

1月1日 - 明けましておめでとうございます！去年どのようなことを学びましたか？

予定をしっかりしても、思ったとおりにはならないです。そして頭が柔らかいままでいた方がいいです。困っている時でも良いことを探した方がいいと気づきました。後は、毎日５～１０分でも日本語の勉強をしたら徐々に進めます。時間がある時しか勉強しないより毎日できるだけ勉強するのは自分の進歩に一番いいです。ところで、暇というものはないです。暇って美味しいですか？（笑）

7th December - How do you stay motivated during winter?

Motivation changes throughout the year for me. If I'm having trouble staying motivated, I change things up. If writing out kanji is not working, I study flashcards in between episodes of the show I'm binging watching. If I am listening to music or reading an article, I take time to note down words I am unfamiliar with on my mobile phone.

Winter is when we think of change, and so it's also a good time to reevaluate your goals. What were your long term goals this year, and how close did you get to them? It's ok if you didn't meet them. Were they realistic? How can they be more realistic? I find short-term goals easier to fit into my life, so I usually focus on those. If my goal was to learn one kanji a day for a month and I stopped halfway, would it have been better to learn one kanji a week for a month?

Lastly, posting on tumblr really is a prominent study tool for me. Trying to explain something to people who might read the post is a good way to see if I actually know the grammar point, or to learn a kanji or vocabulary word. Thus, if my motivation is really low, I come post on tumblr.

12月7日 - 冬にモチベーション下がらない方法は？

季節のよる自分のモチベーションが上がったり下がったりしますね。モチベーションが出てこないときに勉強のやりかたを変えます。漢字を書く練習をやりたくない時に、番組を一気見してるときにエピソードの間に単語カードを勉強したりします。音楽を聴いたり、記事を読んだりしたら、知らない単語を携帯にメモしておきます。

冬と言えば年末があるの、変化することも多いですね。自分の目的も変化すればどうでしょうか？今年の目的は何でしたか？勝ち得られなかっても大丈夫ですよね。変化したらもっと現実的な目的作れませんか？自分には短い間に集中ができる目的のは乗り越えやすいと思います。例えば、毎日新しい漢字を一文字を習う目的を乗り越えなかったら、今度は毎週漢字を一文字はどうでしょうか？

14th January - What was your favourite thing about winter this year?

Visiting my family and seeing how much my son has changed this year. I've also done a good job of balancing a crazy work schedule, an ever-changing baby schedule, and fitting in some Japanese study. This challenge was fun too, thanks @myhoneststudyblr!

家族と会えて、息子の一年の成長を見れて良かったです。めちゃくちゃ仕事のスケジュールも赤ちゃんのいつも変わっているスケジュールをうまくバランスができて、その上に日本語の勉強もなかなか進んでいました。ありがとう、myhoneststudyblr!
