                    He’s never been one for such things as long-term relationships, and perhaps that fact follows closely the Casanova-esque reputation he might have garnered; maybe it’s because no one has caught his eye ( although he can probably name a few who’d beckoned attention ), or maybe it’s because he’d been subjected to an unspoken fear surrounding the concept itself: this idea that you could become so infatuated, so entwined with a person that they could have the power to ruin you if they so pleased. 

    Emily, however, never seemed the type to be so vulnerable. No, she had skin of adamantine and a will that could make diamonds quiver. ( Or, he supposes, it’s what she wanted them to think ).

The tenacity, her grandstanding, was as much inspiring as it was terrifying; he respected her for it, even if her words seemed to have a certain hollowness ascribed to them more often than not. ( Lack of confidence often manifests itself as overconfidence; and doesn’t that sound familiar? ) And hell, if anyone can stand Michael’s cringeworthy jokes as well as she can, isn’t that deserving of some kind of accolade? 

            It’s not until they break up that he wonders what the fuck happened to the strongest pillar in the group. 

He’s loathe to ‘pick a side’, as ye olde adage goes, but canvassing the Class President’s rebound isn’t exactly the way he wants to squander Saturday night ( and maybe this is no better, but at least he won’t have to feign a smile and a laugh at a series of crude objectifications. Contrary to popular belief, it’s never been his style ) Nevertheless, there’s something familiar about trying to console a girl upset over a relationship; perhaps he’s even grateful that his older brother instinct has a reason to kick-in again. 

There’s nothing in her words which pronounce immediate warning signals, but if there is one thing that Josh goddamn Washington is good at, it’s picking apart what makes people tick, and how they do it. It could be a stammer, a skipped syllable, a hesitant um intermittent throughout otherwise pristine sentiment: irregularity is a heliograph for attention.

Thus lips press to the back of her hand mildly, something of a ridiculous curtsy acquainting the motion as it blossoms ( he’s sure it attracts some incredulous eyes, but that’s not the point ), and it’s evident that he’s quite possibly breaking several rules of the bro code, but Mike’s probably broken all of them by now, so screw it.
