His fingers twitch. Something is caught in his throat, and he tilts his head down. When he does, Mari’s concerned face is still in his vision, and he winces, glancing further away.

“...I’m taller than you, now.” His voice is quiet, half-mumbled as it whispers out of his throat. He sees Mari stiffen out of the corner of his eye, and his nails bite into his palm. Long black hair flows in his peripheral, silent as the person it belongs to.

And then,

1. So far, it’s just something he was (and to an extent, other characters were) born with that isn’t necessarily genetic, but can further develop if under the right conditions. It’s like… having a naturally heightened sensitivity to things related to spirits and emotions, which can be enhanced through practice or a shift in awareness. Kel is the only person who can see and communicate with ghosts clearly, but there’s a couple others who have some level of awareness. Also, generally, animals are more aware of spirits than people are.

2. Still figuring that one out, to be honest! Depending on the timeline, Kel would probably end up catching a glimpse of Basil’s grandmother. I’m also very curious about that one grave with the bread on it; have been consistently headcanoning that as someone from the bread siblings’ family so I may explore that at some point.

Ghosts in this AU don’t hang around much unless they have a powerful motivation anchoring them to the physical realm; Mari’s motivation is primarily to watch over Sunny and her friends. I’m not super sure about the rest yet so we’ll have to see :’)

3. The two definitely end up a lot closer than they were before, with the dual fun-mischievous sibling dynamic that I really wish we saw more of in the base game. Mari takes on a closer protective older sibling role for Kel, trying her best to make sure Kel doesn’t get himself hurt while guiding him as he tries to bring his friends back together. Kel looks to Mari for guidance often, especially after Hero stopped being around; in a way, she's replaced Hero, but that ofc doesn't stop him from missing his brother dearly.

With being closer, though, it becomes apparent that some secrets are left unsaid between them, no matter how much they try to be open with each other. Kel, naturally, pulls into his facade of being alright all the time, even when Mari sees him struggling with trying to help his friends. Mari has the secret of the incident held tightly under lock and key. They both notice that something's up with the other, but they've found that forcing the issue doesn't usually work out for either of them.

4. He tries his best! It's a little weird for him sometimes being the inbetween for Mari and his friends, especially when the topics get heavier, but he pretty much just repeats what Mari says to them. Sometimes Mari asks Kel to leave sticky notes from her — I feel like she got the idea from her mom :>
