A "Tchorek plaque" on Barska Street
This plaque commemorates the Polish victims of a street execution carried out by the Germans on 10th February 1944 - one of several retaliations for the assassination of SS-Brigadeführer Franz Kutschera by the Polish resistance 9 days earlier.
Among the victims were two officers of the Armia Krajowa (Home Army) - Jerzy Kleczkowski (code name "RyÅ›") and Edward Madej (code name "Felek"), both of whom had escaped from Woldenberg POW camp two years earlier.
Kleczkowski had previously taken part in Operation Góral, in which the Polish resistance captured over a million US dollars' worth of currency while it was being transported through Warsaw by the Nazi German authorities on 12th August 1943. Madej had previously led Operation Krüger (in which Kleczkowski also took part) - the failed attempt to assassinate SS-Obergruppenführer Friedrich Krüger in Kraków on 29th April 1943.
