This I Promise You (Tavris)
When the visions around you
Bring tears to your eyes
And all that surrounds you
Are secrets and lies
In a city of lights, where the sun never could quite setâŚon the rooftops of a building so gloriously tallâŚa shadow slipped gracefully over a swath of concrete like a mother bird entering her nest. A light breeze danced playfully about, batting about the clothes set out on a line to dry and tossing around stray leaves it passed; just a small child playing on the playground that was the world. It tugged at several strands of silken hair, as if gently attempting to pull its owner out into the light of the stolid streetlamps towering over everything like guards around a palace.
From this vantage point, one could see the sprawling landscape stretching with cars rumbling along on their sleepy way back home until the morning dawned once more. And just across lay another building-a mirror to its twin sitting in front of it with only a street separating them from each other. Many windows sprinkled its surface, some of them a void with no life, others with flittering shapes darting across their curtains signaling the inhabitants to be in residence. Number 7 across the way had their window open, allowing for a tirade of giggles to come flooding out into the echoing night air. It seems the new baby within was in a sprightly sort of mood this evening, but then again, the child always seemed to be amicableâŚalmost too amicable.
Upon the lonely rooftop, someone fidgeted-her crimson sided sneaker nudging the pavement below as she leaned backwards, her spine curving placidly against the cool surface of the lawn chair behind her, its cerulean blue cushions molding around her body like a new coat. Itâs always the same. The thought flitted across her mind as her eyes slid neatly shut for a moment. Her slightly tousled light amber locks brushed against her high cheekbones, barely touching her blue tinted lashes behind the jet black overhang of frames sitting sweetly on a soft nose. Her face was pale and dusted with small freckles that seem to have taken advice from the continental plates and drifted away from each other.
Her eyelids retreated, revealing crystal-clear eyes of a lovely cobalt, their pupils contracting slightly due to the light spreading like a web around their owner. Number 365 was active again, only now they were holding each other close-close enough that they almost seemed to be stuck together with some kind of superglue. Earlier that afternoon, the woman had been bragging endlessly about her man as if he were some kind of Hellenic Demigod who was oh-so-perfect and had all of her adoration and affection. The young woman on the roof snorted to herself as the memory flitted across her mind. Only yesterday the âperfectâ couple had scared half of the neighborhood when a piece of fine china was thrown out of the window, hitting the sidewalk below. Their screams had echoed through the night, alerting everyone to their petty quarrels and just what exactly they thought of each other. Oh but, heaven forbid anyone should think they were anything but perfect.
She rolled her eyes. It was all so sickeningly fake that it made a bitter taste swarm the inside of her mouth at the mere thought. Some would liken romance to fishing-casting a line out and seeing if anyone takes any interest in your bait. Well, if that were true then the couple in Number 365âs line seemed to be fraying about the edges, not that theyâd let anyone know that, of course. And if there were âmore fish in the seaâ then number 118âs boyfriend of a year had left her to go sailing the oceans and possibly find a new little fish; something his mother deemed more acceptable for her son. Practically everyone in the vicinity had heard them arguing about it over the phone when five days prior, while the hidden woman on the roof had been on her way to college campus. Later that evening, howls of pain were ringing through the air like toxic wind chimes, and anguished questioning falling on ears that had already made their final decision. She would get no answer nor reprieve from the pain even with Number 6 comforting her, hoping to get in good with his neighbor and fix her broken heart. He should know how lonely and agonizing a broken heart could feel; his own love life had suffered greatly as well. His boyfriend of ages uncounted had cheated on him with his best friend, only leaving him after the infidelity was discovered and daring to take all of their belongings with him-a last jerk before tearing the fishhook from the fishâs mouth.
Oh but number 84âs ex-girlfriend was no better. She kept throwing her line out greedily, regardless of the fish she had already caught. Her Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde impersonation was Oscar material- in the morning she was so devoted to her dear datemate, showering them with âloveâ and attentionâŚbut as soon as the sun set she would be sleeping with everyone within a ten mile radius-her datemate being none-the-wiser. Poor kid was crushed when the news hit them after she tried to seduce their âtwin brotherâ. Turns out the dumb bimbo was drunk and had mistaken her âdatemateâ for their twin brother. It was only then that they listened to what their brother had been trying to tell them for months. Only then did the fish grab the bait and swim off in defiance; unwilling to play her games any longer. Â
Then there was number 370-such a new face in town filled with big dreams of love and life. She threw out her bait every chance she could glimpse, unaware of the starry-eyed young lady gazing at her with loving eyes. It would take nearly forever for her to realize a fish was nibbling on her bait-a fish far grander than she had ever imagined. Hopefully she would get off better than those other lonely hearts tied together with a needle-point thin piece of string, the one that was weaving their destinies together in the great tapestry of life.
Tears of noxious pain teetered at the edge of her vision, her mind spinning backwards through the scars on her own fractured heart. Vriska Serket had her own share of suffering at the hands of those who had claimed to stay with her forever.
I'll be your strength
I'll give you hope
Keeping your faith when it's gone
The one you should call
Was standing there all along
One small, almost delicate hand brushed across the rusted brown symbol seared into the t-shirt covering her upper torso; the t-shirt that belonged not to her. This was evidenced by the way it bagged and bunched up around her hips, nearly hiding her within its shiny black fabric. She let her nose dip towards the collar, a waft of scent rushing into her nostrils. Her eyes fluttered closed once more as she took in the one scent that mattered. The scent of someone who would awaken from his dreams in a cold bed, devoid of the drowsy figure of the woman he so loved. SomeoneâŚsomeone she probably should have notified when the restless emotions within her had driven her from any semblance of a peaceful nightâs sleep. Someone she should have known would be able to sense something was wrong, even when he was in a deep sleep. Someone she was afraid to lose. Afraid that one day he would hear the voices of her inner demons, and upon agreeing with them, leave her crumbled to dust. Except he didnât; he couldnât. He loved her too much to do that. And he wasnât the only one. Even though she had unnecessary doubts that led her to worry about being harmed by those she loved dearly, that made them draw closer to her, to let her know she was indeed loved.
Vriska sighed, a couple of cerulean drops falling towards the ebony fabric that held her. She sniffed, moving a hand to flick away the moisture clouding her vision. She couldnât afford to get his t-shirt wet, to give him evidence that she was wrestling with the pain she had been battling for years.
And I will take
You in my arms
And hold you right where you belong
Till the day my life is through
This I promise you
This I promise you
But the silence was not to last. Hands larger than her own gently took hers, lifting the young woman to her feet and into the chocolate brown eyes of her lover. Tavros Nitramâs eyebrows crinkled in the middle, his eyes pools of concern and comfort. He searched her face, as if looking for the answers he already suspected the moment he had startled awake in their bed- the moment he could no longer feel the warmth of her encircled in his arms.
I've loved you forever
In lifetimes before
And I promise you never
Will you hurt anymore
I give you my word
I give you my heart
This is a battle we've won
And with this vow
Forever has now begun
âAreâŚare you okay, baby?â Vriskaâs lip trembled but she squared her shoulders in an impression of someone without problems weighing her down.
âYes.â She managed, forcing a smile to her face; one that didnât meet her eyes.
âAre you sure about that?â
Any semblance of keeping her cool crumbled, and she fell into his arms, the tears falling thick and fast down her cheeks. She shook her head, burying her face in his chest, her throat too tight for speech. His face nuzzled into the crook of her neck, his warm breath wafting across her skin and relaxing her tense muscles.
âWhatâs wrong?â he asked, his grip tightening in the way he knew brought a sense of safety back into her panicking brain. He hated what it did to her; despised the fact that she had to deal with something so terrible that brought her so much pain. Every time she had called him when he was away, tears leaking out of her cerulean orbs, all he wanted was to make her smile. How he had wished he could have been there like he is now, to be able to comfort the love of his life.
Just close your eyes (close your eyes)
Each loving day (each loving day)
And know this feeling won't go away (no)
Til' the day my life is through
This I promise you
This I promise you
âThe usual anxietyâŚâ she breathed, squeezing her eyes shut and attempting to burrow deeper into his embrace. Tavros frowned, holding her tighter as if afraid it would take her from him.
Over and over I thought
When I hear you call
âYou have nothing to worry about, baby. Nothing at all.â He pulled back, gently wiping away the tears with his thumbs. âBecauseâŚwithout you in my life baby, I just wouldnât be living at all.â
His girlfriend smiled, her eyes brightening through the remnants of tears fading away into oblivion. He was so perfect; so realâŚ.so amazing. Her lips gently molded against his, her gratefulness seeping into every inch of this connection. They pulled apart after a minute, foreheads resting against each other, smiling.
âThank you, love. I canât thank you enough.â She whispered.
Tavros beamed at her, his eyes glinting with a hint of mischief. âYou can start by going back to sleep. We have to get up tomorrow, remember?â
âSeriously?â Vriska rolled her eyes, the only betrayal of this being the smile plastered on her face. âCome on, doofus, I actually agree-we should be sleeping.â
His face became redder than a tomato sitting on a stop sign.
And I will take you in my arms (I will take you in my arms)
And hold you right where you belong (right where you belong)
Til' the day my life is through
This I promise you, babe
Just close your eyes each loving day (each loving day)
And know this feeling won't go away (no)
Every word I say is true
This I promise you
Every word I say is true
This I promise you
Ooh, I promise you
