Unpopular Fairy Tail Opinion #2-Lucy’s Depression-Slight spoilers.
Slight spoilers past the 1 year timeskip (nothing major).
It’s always bugged me that anime shounen characters never portrayed any non-comedic mental issues, (from what i’ve seen). Characters have had a yandere/tsundere based mental illness but nothing that wasn’t far from their normal character.(Aka Bipolar for comedic purposes etc). So, after Natsu left her for a year, and Lucy gained depression, I was a little excited so see how this would turn out. Again I’m not a sadist I swear. But I wanted to see how they would incorporate it into the usually happy anime. As someone who both knows people with/ has on/off depression, I was curious to see if they would accurately display how it is.
Hiro started off the 1 year timeskip, with a clearly depressed Lucy trying to stay positive in day to day life, she see’s Natsu and Happy all over the place, without them really being there. (Hallucinations?) For the next few chapters you see Lucy be reserved and distant with Natsu. But then it just goes? She’s suddenly fine and happy with everyone again, and it’s not really been mentioned since them..
So, I was slightly disappointed, before I realised it may be more of a bipolar depression. Bipolar depression,(manic depression), is a type of depression in which you experience manic highs (confident, happy etc) and manic lows (depression, anxiety, low confidence). This would fit Lucy very well and means her depression could easily come back at an events notice, (much like real depression), and with the way the manga is heading, it’s very likely some event could set off her depression.
If Hiro wishes to bring it back- which he may not. It’s hard to write in the first place, but introducing it into an already existing character while trying to keep their personality is hard, and many people won’t like it. But I really loved how he wrote it into the story, he could’ve bypassed how a real human would’ve felt in her situation by joking over it, but he established that she was clearly not the same Lucy after the Tartarus Arc, and I highly respect Hiro Mashima for even attempting to work this into the his main female lead. <3
