The Alstom factory workers have to ensure they remain out of harms way. Safety is one of the highest priorities when working around heavy machinery such as turbines and so for dangerous tasks, the Alstom teams have to be issued a Work Permit. These permits are used to outline the risks of a potential project so that the employees know just how careful and vigilant to be during the project.
Once they have been issued the Work Permit the factory workers will then begin working on a damaged turbine. All throughout this lengthy process the workers must ensure they lock the machine down with a chain when they leave so nobody could accidentally operate it or use it with malicious intent. Only the head machinist who is working on the turbine has the key to unlock it and he will only do so once the turbine has been officially fixed for operation.
When maintenance is due, the Alstom workers have to take the machinery apart to inspect it as part of a team. The team can consist of multiple people of different experience levels and expertise. Usually the team will contain a supervisor, a crane operator, inspectors, a technician and others, sometimes trainees, to help with the laborious tasks. This exercise is a lengthy process, as it all has to be done safely and carefully so clear communication is key within the team.
The current reporting system requires the user to input the data acquired from inspection into a basic computer system. This often requires the Alstom turbine inspectors to note down the problems they find on the turbine on a piece of paper on site and then take it into one of the offices and transfer the information into the system form so it can be saved. This can sometimes lead to inaccuracies in the report due to workers forgetting specific details or transcribing their notes improperly.
