First I make a very rough sketch or some thumbnails to get an idea of what I want. Then I scroll through my Pinterest boards to get some inspiration for coloring, lighting, how to establish the mood, details for building/environment/interior etc., and pin everything that I need. Make sure you don’t use just one picture or artwork as a reference, but use several so that you won’t just copy everything. Use them as inspiration but make it your own thing.Then I make a more detailed sketch or line-art, and try out values and a palette, and start painting from there. There are more detailed process images on my Patreon. 

I have some unused sketches and ideas from before because the photo limit is 10, so maybe I’ll finish those some time! They take a lot of time though, so I do have to find the time for it.

It’s hard to say. I never got any formal art schooling, except for art in high school I guess, but I learned through doing fan art over the years, and now commissions. With (almost) every piece I try to add something new to the drawing, so in one I might try new lighting and in another a new coloring technique. Basically I trick myself into practicing new things by drawing something that I love. Like right now I’m working on several drawings of Avatar the Last Airbender, but the new thing that I’m adding is that I’m doing elaborate backgrounds so I can practice perspective. And a couple of years ago when I was obsessed with bts, I’d draw their choreographies to practice anatomy. And I think that helped a lot looking back!
