          He's not sure if anyone had seen his little stumble almost hitting the ground until he was able to catch himself with the bench's arm, because there isn't many people in the area. He must have looked stupid, just enough for people to make fun of him and possibly point and laugh as if he was a comedian. It would seem less suspicious if he would just move away from the area and act like nothing happened, instead he looks down at his shoes and hopes that his situation would get better.
