incoming case... rest. sender rests their head on receiver's shoulder. @sabohteurs / tara carpenter.
there were many things that finley stevens never thought he'd be, in this life. he always wanted to be a good man, but never thought he had, or ever would, achieve that. he longed to be at peace with himself and the never ending journey to find his father, but that hadn't come yet, either. and then there was being a father of his own, which not only never crossed his mind, but if it did, the idea would scare the shit out of him. with how often he traveled, and the amount of times he's almost died ( as well as put others in danger in the process ), it had never been something he thought he wanted. even when he met tara, found out she was his, he didn't feel like a dad. he didn't act like one, either, the two always fighting, fin sometimes acting even less mature than his teenage daughter. but as time went on, they seemed to get the hang of it. rocky, still, but better.
they still have two hours left in their drive. fin was fending off sleep with a cup of gas station coffee, watching the long road, dark, aside from what the headlights show. he doesn't know when tara had begun to slump in the seat beside him, but finley notices when her head gently thuds against his shoulder. glancing down at tara, her eyes are closed, her breathing is even - she looks peaceful as she rests. unable to help the small but tender grin that tugs the corners of his lips, fin quietly drapes his flannel over her body as a makeshift blanket before giving his attention back to the road. maybe he didn't always get it right, but he was trying. he hoped that was enough for her.
