It seems to me a big part of the mess that is Police Brutality is this: Police have been given a badge of authority to speak to and treat people however they see fit. They seem to embark on situations with assumptions and a desire to let loose some pinned up anger (low frequency type of shit). They speak down to people and naturally some people are submissive to such language ( to a figure they consider to be authority) and some are expressive in saying "I don't feel I deserve to be spoken to this way". In this case Police Officers feel its necessary to assert themselves with force which increases the possibility of conflict. If you think about it, what type of person wants to be a police officer? A person who thinks that laws determine "right and wrong" and who is "good and bad" is based on how well you follow rules. Well some are more naturally "Rule Followers" and others of us feel that we are the governors of our decision making process and don't take kindly to aggression without what we feel is due cause. Its culture differences. How do we begin to bridge the gap? It certainly seems to be a race thing. I think those of us who share race sometimes share a lot of culturally inspired instincts though that certainly doesn't limit our character. It seems black people are more outspoken than most other (American) people I come in contact with and thats something "authoritative" figures don't take kindly to. Their mission when entering any territory is to be in control of it. If there is anyone there threatening their "leader" position they lose their human compassion and go into primal mode "dehumanize he who threatens me and bring them down to my emotionally driven state of thought". Their actions are emotionally driven. Police Officers have to feel powerful more than they want you to feel safe. Its a total egotistical job. I was at the NYC criminal court house fairly recently (don't ask) and I noticed that the big bus they used to take people to prison was cleverly titled "New York's Boldest". This hurt me because I think boldness is a quality that should be celebrated. not criminalized. I've slipped into my feelings, back to the question "How do we bridge the gap?" i have no clue. Empathy, nonemotional diplomatic conversation? of course but these are such esoteric ideas. How do we come up with something concrete? Its frustrating because I just wanna sing songs, make jewelry and enhance my connection with love and creation but this shit gets me all discombobulated.
