It's terrible. This had never happened to me while reading a book before, but I ended up doing a mental fancast for the main characters of You & Me by Tal Bauer. Don't judge my mental fancast too harshly, because I'm absolutely convinced by it.

As for the book itself, it's a lovely love story between two men in their forties, as well as a beautiful story about fatherhood. Anyway, it's really great, and if you can : read it.
I've rarely loved a love story as much as this one. Everything feels so natural, and they communicate so well. I also love seeing adults who are already well established in their lives fall in love. The characters are incredibly endearing, and this is definitely the kind of book I'll read again.
Summary: After a wonderful night in Vegas where FBI Agent, Noah Downing got to truly experience himself for the first time, he has to fly back to Iowa as an old cold trail heats up again, leaving behind a the man he had dinner plans with without a word.
Cole Kennedy also... works for the FBI as a profiler and just so happens to be requested in Iowa and now faces the man that ghosted him.

Now for my thoughts! Keep in mind some mild spoilers
I really enjoyed this read.
I will state, I preferred the second book more than the first. The first was still good but it was softer and more simple. That's not a bad thing! But I usually need something a bit more.
There was a bit of a push and pull with these two but when they were together they were cute, sweet and 'soft' which I don't knock that at all. Other than my usually opinion on too much push and pull, the thriller portion was interesting but also a smidge lack luster for me and I thought it could have been a bit more flushed out and delved into deeper.
The mystery didn't really feel all that there for me. I had a man in my mind and was like 'he'd be too obvious but he's also the only man I could see it being at this point' and was both simultaneously right and wrong.
There were also moments where I had to pull the book away and stare at the wall or a ceiling, brows furrowed like 'what?' before sighing it away and continuing.
There was a chapter where Tal showed the killers POV and I always like a unexpected pov but in the grand scheme of this book had me like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ as something might have had more of a purpose but with the way it all went lost a bit of that? at least to me. Or maybe it was it's own red herring.
I would love for Tal to rework and re-release this a bit. The bones and structure are all there I just want him to extend and let some things have more room. I feel he tried to turn our heads one way instead of looking the other but only to throw something in there as a surprise/twist and I think it could work if it had more time or if some things were rewritten.
Again though, still a good book! I would give this one by itself a 6/10
Now "The Grave Between Us" my my my my MY. I loved this one. On its own it would have a 7-7.5. The crime and thriller part of this one was so good.
Ian is our killer, and don't worry- that's not a spoiler and I need to talk about him. Ian is a twisted motherfucker and the relationship between him and Cole and the psychological battles and mental games they were having and just- It was so good. I even, at moments, would read something and be like "what if it was Ian" cause it would be so fucked up and disturbing and I could see him doing it.
He's OBSESSED with Cole. and it kept me wondering which areas of their lives had he infiltrated. What had he touched.? What little things will he leave behind for Cole? Like Noah left a dry erase marker heart over the sink and my brain was like 'what if it was Ian?' and it was only chapter 3 LOL.
I loved seeing Coles earlier times in the FBI and his interactions with Ian. Ian is a sexually sadistic serial killer and you could feel it. A lot of his interactions with Cole... it was like you could feel? the erotic tension in the air from Ian and it just.. I don't know, something about it was alluring to read. So dark and twisted and could keep you guessing what could happen or what might have happened and I just love some truly fucked up characters pfpfpt
I liked that I knew what Cole was doing to himself too, I could see it and this couple be considered a spoiler so warning but I even was thinking "So hard to protect your loved ones by pushing them away that you leave yourself open."
Speaking of which NOAH IS A BADASS.
Like listen, yes he literally runs the office so we know this but I LOVE seeing a character be able to spot and point out things that other characters, usually their partner, didn't see and be able to piece together what they couldn't have.
Like take Noah back to the first time Ian was being hunted and get his ass in there to find him pfpfpt - silly but still, I loved it.
I know I keep saying "I loved this, I liked that" BUT one thing that I really enjoy in stories is someone doubting themselves or wavering in the face of a threat. Breaking or fracturing or shutting down. I love people having flaws and experiencing the weight of them or people who are moderately able to keep a tight lid on their emotional regulation just not being able to. Not able to think clearly because of it or act in a way that isn't them because of it.
I don't know WHY I love it so much but I got to experience a bit of it here and I appreciate it.

Anywho, if you want a gay crime story that's a bit softer and sweeter, a shorter read than some other crime one's i've read, I'd recommend this. ^^
