Ok, I'm sorry, i really don't mean to bring up the drama again, but I looked up the director and writer of De Oost, and no, neither of them are southeast Asian men like some people in this fandom are claiming, aka, making it "okay" for them to write this story. I just thought it was important that someone make this known. The speaking over of Asians in tog fandom needs to stop.
hey so this is the last anon i’m going to take about this topic (and if it becomes an issue i’m just going to turn anon off). i’m happy to answer dms or non-anon messages about this but i think i’ve said what i want to say publicly.
you’re right that the writer isn’t southeast asian; he’s of turkish descent. but i was able to find several sources identifying jim taihuttu as dutch-malukan.
i think there’s a different conversation to be had about who ought tell what stories. i don’t think it’s an “okay”/”unacceptable” binary. you can be part of a marginalized group and do a story badly, or not be part of that group and do it well. i think it’s more useful to consider what someone’s perspective is bringing to that story (and their identity is certainly going to weigh in that, but it’s not the only thing). more broadly, it’s also useful to consider whose voices are getting centered at a systemic level.
knowing jim taihuttu’s background did make me feel better about this movie but i was equally as reassured by his past filmography. neither of those things change the fact i don’t want to watch it or have it on my dash untagged.
again, i don’t think this is a Bad Movie but i’m wary of how it might be received on tumblr if a critical mass of fandom doesn’t have the full historical context. i also can’t speak to anyone else’s preferences and experiences, but i have gotten several messages/dms from folks of asian descent who have also been hurt and distressed by this conversation, and that’s really upsetting. i am sorry to see i’m not alone. idk what else to say except ask everyone to remember that there’s always a real live human with feelings on the other side of the screen.
