Stepping inside the Lovelle Manor, Tai's excitement burned away. Something was wrong. Luca seemed not to notice as he breezed unconcerned past the scholar, shaking off the powdery snow. The mage looked radiant, smiling like all his dreams had come true- that is until he caught the expression on Tai's face. Before he could ask what was wrong a wet nurse had come dashing down the stairs, a cloth in one hand and wailing apologies. Luca turned his luminous gaze on the girl, slight irritation on his perfect features.
"Forgive me, Lord Lovelle." She sobbed, dabbing at her eyes. "I c-couldn't do nothin' for her!" Now the annoyance was real and Luca grabbed the woman by both shoulders, faint panic edging into his voice.
"For who? What has happened?!" He shot Tai a panicked glance and then the expression was gone, replaced by the imperious countenance of a House Lord.
"Th-the girl!" More sobbing, "she was too weak. She didn't--"
Before the words were out of her mouth Tai had bolted past the servant, clearing the steps two-at-a-time until he came to the landing. The air seemed to take on a greasy, cold quality and the scholar knew instantly what it was he was feeling. The Void. Without pausing for breath he was off again, sprinting for the nursery and skidding to a stop on the rich carpet by the cribs. There he finally saw his children.
In one large, hand-carved crib lay two children;the first of which he noticed was a boy. He was large, plump and healthy. Wisps of dark, tousled hair crowned his head and the tuft of his puffy tail peeked out through the bottom of his swaddling cloth. In truth he looked every bit the spit and image of Tai with his natural black hair. The young healer would have smiled in adoration if it weren't for the chilling tendrils of he void emanating from him. With a shudder he turned away from the boy.
Tai let out a cry of dismay as he gazed on what had been his daughter. She was small, why was she so small? Barely half the size of her brother and so frail he feared she would fall apart if she were lifted. Her skin would have been dark like Luca's but was now turning blue. Tai felt tears blur his vision and he lifted the girl, weeping softly. Before realizing it the scholar carried the girl to the master bedroom and sat down, laying the sad bundle on his lap and smoothing her dark hair away from her face. Her features were delicate like Luca's, and Tai couldn't help but feel she would have been just as devastating as his husband if she had lived to reach full flower. His breath caught again and fresh tears fell, spilling onto the infant's soft blanket, her skin.
The tiny creature made a noise and shifted as if responding to the salty downpour. Tai held his breath. He hadn't imagined that, had he? Still holding his breath the young male poked the tiny bundle and she shifted again, uttering the first note of her newborn cry. Somewhere down the hall her brother gave an answering cry and Tai hastened to lift the small infant and hold her to his body. She felt warmer now, something like color returning to her features. Over the sound of her cries Tai heard and odd noise and he realized he had been laughing; his relief flowing from him in short, soft chuckles.
Luca appeared in the doorway, holding the plump boy. His luminous eyes raked over Tai and then fell to the softly crying bundle in his arms, relief showing in his features too. The mage stepped forward, holding their son, Aysin against him and again the cold, cloying presence of the Void washed over them. In Tai's arms the frail girl shuddered and went still, her breathing cut off in mid wail. Instantly Tai knew what was happening. "It's him! It's Aysin!" He cried. "Get him away from her!" Luca's eyes went wide and he vanished from the room without a word. There was he softest hiss of sound and the bundle in his arms was breathing again, trembling from a cold no-one else felt.
After a few moments a wet nurse appeared at the doorway to take the young girl for a feeding. Tai cautioned her to keep the two babies apart and she nodded as if she already knew.
He sighed, sagging against the tall post of the bed. There was no way both children could live together in the house. At first Tai toyed with the notion of sending one of them away but the thought of abandoning his child disgusted the scholar. He thought of a dozen or so solutions all involving elaborate fixes but Tai had to face it; he could not stay here. The children would need to be separated and raised individually by their fathers.
Tai looked up from his reverie and saw the shadowed figure of Luca leaning on the door frame. Somehow it had become dark without the scholar noticing and as his eyes took in the silhouette of his husband, he got the impression the man had been there a very long time. Their eyes met and in that moment Tai knew the other male had arrived at the same conclusion.
Between the two males the air hung heavy with all the things that could have been said, should be said. But it was pointless. It was as though a shroud had been lifted and everything the two males were thinking could be seen, felt, as plainly as if they were sharing a mind. Finally, Tai rose, his breath a little shaky and opened his mouth to speak.
Or tried. The pale miqo'te's voice had deserted him in the silence and he gazed helplessly at his husband. After all, how was he to say goodbye on what was supposed to be his happiest day? Tears blurred the scholar's vision once again and suddenly Luca was there, one arm snaking around his torso as the thumb of his other hand softly grazed Tai's lower lip as it trembled. "I love you, Tai." The mage whispered, before crushing his mouth against those lips.
Every word after that for the next several hours was lost in a series of heady, breathy moments, wicked sensation and scalding, shuddering peaks of pleasure until the pair found themselves dropping exhausted, to sleep on the rug at the foot of the bed. It was Tai who woke first, slipping noiselessly from beneath Luca's arm and pressing a gentle kiss against his forehead. No goodbyes. He told himself, dressing quickly and melting from the room to collect his daughter.
