How does tadalafil work?
Tadalafil is one of the phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. When these groups of drugs inhibit PDE5 they in turn enhance erectile function.
During sexual arousal, an erection occurs when there is enough blood flow in the penile arteries that results in relaxed arteries and smooth muscle of the corpus cavernosum. This response is moderated by the production of nitric oxide (NO) in the endothelial cells and the nerve terminals. The release of NO boosts the synthesis of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (mainly known as cyclic GMP or cGMP) in the smooth muscle cells. The cyclic GMP helps relax the smooth muscle and increases the blood flow to the corpus cavernosum.
Tadalafil inhibits phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) by increasing the amount of cGMP. It is worth noting that one must experience sexual stimulation to initiate the natural release of nitric oxide. This is because Tadalafil effects will not occur without sexual stimulation.
Tadalafil can reduce the symptoms of enlarged prostate glands including urgent/frequent urination, difficulty in peeing, and urinary incontinence. It achieves this by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder.
In pulmonary hypertension, tadalafil helps relax the blood vessels in the chest. This in turn helps increase the supply of blood to the lungs and also reduces the workload of the heart.
