On the Waxwing 6U8A5046 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: A Cedar Waxwing takes flight. These secretive birds are more common than some might think. They are more commonly heard than seen. A small flock descended on the weeping cherry tree in my yard. Together with bluebirds, robins, blue jays and cardinals, they consumed all the fruit.

Locals Have Never Seen 6U8A5255 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: Its name comes in part from the waxy red secretions found at the tips of secondary feathers of some of these birds. More commonly heard than seen, their song is a thin, high pitched whistle. Once you learn it, it is hard to forget. It always stops me in my tracks, and I find myself scanning the surrounding trees for a glimpse. I sometimes go entire seasons without seeing them, so imagine my elation having them visit the yard to feast the fruits of our weeping cherry tree. They are some of the most beautiful birds that locals have never seen.

Make My Day 6U8A5870 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: This week, the weeping cherry in our front yard became the go-to destination for a quick meal for so many birds. This evening was especially interesting when a small flock of Cedar Waxwings showed up to feed on tree’s small cherries. It was wonderfully convenient and extremely pleasant to be able to sit on the front porch and enjoy the show. I must say that it made my day!

38W3257 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: The deer carcass in my back field certainly hasn't gone to waste. Five bald eagles along with a red shouldered hawk and turkey vultures visited yesterday. The eagles don't seem brazen enough to return since I placed a camouflaged camera trap setup out. This red tailed hawk doesn't seem to mind much, however. What a beautiful bird. The camera trap allows for a different perspective.
