Enamel Nef, Austria, late 19th century
The stand and bowl decorated with vignettes in polychrome enamel, depicting classical figures, with a central stem flanked by dolphin mounts, atop four claw feet, surmounted by a detachable gilt nef, pierced with foliate scrolls, complete with rigging, sailors, and sails in polychrome, decorated with similar scenes, height 36cm, weight 741g/23.82ozt
This piece was placed centrally on the table as a tribute to a special guest or as an eye-catcher. The bowl was probably filled with wine. In later examples such as this one, it is also possible that sweets were placed inside.

This Nef is not one that presented spices or wine. It was a clock, the dial was on the quarterdeck under a figure of the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. All the figures and guns were movable and moved every hour while two Sailors in the crow's nests struck the hour and quarters on a bell.

These artfully painted with mythological scenes from the world of Greek sea gods, spice or wine Nef is 50 in. (127 cm.) high; 34 in. (87 cm.) wide; 13 in. (35 cm.) deep. On her there is a large working and celebrating crew in various positions. The Nef is carried by a mermaid with a gabled tail.
