I generally don’t like the idea of the Death of the Author.  That being said, I think that the Winged Victory of Samothrace, one of my all-time favourite sculptures, is vastly improved by the loss of the head and the arms.  It transforms the piece into one that is all about the movement, the grace, the power.  I will never forget the first time a saw it.
