Modern Times Aim True Hoppy Table Beer on tap at their 30th Street location. A 3 of 4. Nice lighter bodied and fruity 4.9% beer. Refreshing and somewhat thin, but has a great hop profile and finishes clean and dry. Would work quite well with food.

Field Bier
I’ve always been intrigued by Agrarian Ales. The brewery is located on a working hop farm in the Willamette Valley. I’ve never visited the tasting room, but it looks cozy. And the concept of farm to bottle beer is everything I’ve ever wanted.
They’ve recently started self-distributing in Portland, so I picked up a bottle of their Field Bier. It’s a simple, tasty saison made with only Belgian pilsner malt, nugget hops grown on the farm, and classic French farmhouse yeast. It’s a balanced, gulpable beer. It reminds me of a certain brew I made a month back, but of course cleaner and properly carbonated.
Hopefully, we can get out to visit this summer. The folks at Agrarian are currently crowdfunding a new taproom. A sudden change in zoning law made it illegal to use the old barn to serve beer. In the meantime you can still visit the brewery and drink among the hop bines on sunny days. If your passing through Eugene, Oregon, make it a destination.
The One for One Rule
I have a simple rule when it comes to buying beer: I can spend up to one dollar per ounce. That means: $12 for a single twelve ounce bottle and $24 for a 750 milliliter wine bottle. Of course, I’ll adjust that calculus when I really want something. Fifteen bucks for a single Cherry Adam? Yeah, okay. I’ll hide it in the back of the cart.
So how did I end up with not one but two bottles from Ale Apothecary each with a pricetag of $35.50? Answer: I didn’t pay for them. My birthday is on December Twenty-first. (Yes, it was hard growing up with a birthday so close to Christmas.) My beautiful wife Sarah went out and bought me two bottles from the Ale Apothecary because she knows I wouldn’t buy them myself. She’s a great gift giver.
The Beer Formerly Known as La Tache – another trademark dispute victim – is the Ale Apothecary’s seven percent alcohol “table sour.” If you’re looking for a puckering experience, this is the beer for you. La Tache is very similar to Sahalie in it’s creation – malted wheat, malted barley, Cascade hops – but it takes a detour to sour town.
La Tache fizzes and pops in the glass. My first sniff is full of granny smith apples. It’s going to be sour; I prepare my tongue. It’s lemony and fresh. The lively carbonation prickles. I taste lemonade and old wood. I think I saw La Tache described as a Northwest Berliner Weisse. I can see it. It’s much cleaner than Sahalie, with only hints of wild yeast. It’s spritzy and fun, but definitely drink it with food. On it’s own, the acid is a bit much.

There’s just something about table beers. Well, good table beers. While not the sexiest or most boundary pushing beer on the list, the table beer gets the job done. As I said on our Just Tables show, I typically drink water (or something not beer) rather than the beer in front of me with food. I recently visited Triptych with some food I picked up at Freddy’s before I arrived. I grabbed two…

Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp Sweet Sunny South Table Beer (Picked up at Total Wine). A 3 of 4. One of my favorites of the 12-pack - this has some great fruit qualities and tartness to it amidst some relatively complex yeast notes. Quite light in body with some sour grain notes and fruit-juice like qualities. Refreshing, and plenty complex enough to keep it interesting.
